CC in PRS McCarty?

Re: CC in PRS McCarty?

I tried one in a Hamer Studio Archtop. Very similar guitar. Sounded very good. At first I thought it wasn't quite bright enough but after tweaking the polepieces and ht. adjustment it sounded very good. The CC takes some getting used to because it has such a pronounced midrange that at first it sounds like it is lacking some treble...

Thanks Lew, I always have found flame maple top guitars overly bright, and with the 25 inch scale it could use some fattening up. I usually play a mahogany LP Jr with a JB in it and have found the 24 3/4 scale to be a bit fatter in the mids.

You'd probably like the CC then. Very smooth highs. It's becoming my favorite Duncan bridge pickup. I've used it in two of my Hamers (one solid body and semi-hollowbody) and in one of my Strats. It sounds especially good to me through a somewhat bright or crunchy sounding amp like a vintage Marshall...that's when it gets closest to that early EVH kind of tone, IMO.

I agree, I used one in a LP DC that had the hollow chambers that cut some of the mids out, and it sounded more like a solid LP after the swap. Hopefully it will do the same to the Mc. Thanks again!

You're welcome!:)

Re: CC in PRS McCarty?

Did you end up with the CC? To me the McCarty has huge mids so a C-5 may do better. A Rio Grande BBQ may be another nice choice! The BBQ will have more sparkle than the CC.

Re: CC in PRS McCarty?

That "orangish" guitar on the main page of this site is my vintage yellow PRS Custom 24 with a Custom Custom Trembucker in the bridge.

Not that I didn't like the HFS pickup that came standard in that guitar, but the Custom Custom is much smoother and grittier (if that's not a contradiction).

Re: CC in PRS McCarty?

I have a CC in my swamp ash mirage...

I find it to have a very throaty growl to it, but it's not harsh in the upper frequencies...so yes, it makes sense Evan..lol

Re: CC in PRS McCarty?

Do you need a trembucker spaced p'up for a McCarty or any PRS?

Remember the McCarty is not like the bolt on PRS guitars. It is more mellow and squishy in the mids.

I use std spacing. The e's clip the outer side of the pole pieces.

Re: CC in PRS McCarty?

I never did the swap papersoul. I had to sell the Mc to help offset some costs of fixing my house from hurricane Rita. Bummer, I really liked that guitar, and the new owner loves it. It was a black flame 10top. Still have my cheap Fender Showmaster HH that I just posted a question about though. They use a Duncan reverse polarity in the bridge and was wondering how I could swap it for a CC. Would it have to be reverse polarity too?

Re: CC in PRS McCarty?

OlinMusic tried one in his PRS but it didn't work for him. I heard it and I agree. But his PRS is pretty beefy and a little dark and every piece of wood is different, so your mileage may vary. I really like my Custom 3 in my 355 (Custom Custom with Alnico 3 magnet in it).

It really does depend on the guitar. I have 1 Cu22 that tends to that bright side that a CC works well in. My other Cu22 however has a much beefier natural tone that doesn't like the CC so well.

Re: CC in PRS McCarty?

A friend og mine who lives near by found the JB to be a great fit for a McCarty. I think he uses Wolfetones now but I think I'll try the JB/59.
