CC or Frankenstein in a Les Paul

After years of dabbling, I've come to the conclusion that I'm an Alnico 2 pickup fan. I've got a Frankenstein in my custom strat and it sounds incredible IMO. I'm wondering if I'll love it just as much in my R9 or should I look at a Custom Custom?

They are very similar, but I think the Frankenstein has the edge

Let me clarify...they cover a lot of the same sonic ground and the output is very similar. However, when I said the Frankie had the "edge", I meant it...it's a slightly more open sounding pickup with less emphasis on the low-mids than the Custom Custom. I've owned both and had them in the same guitar(s).

I typically find the Custom Custom a bit too smooth, personally, and the Frankie adds in just enough spank, bite and bark without being unnecessarily "bright". Definitely the more balanced and superior pickup of the two in my opinion (and it sounds fine in your typical Les Paul, certainly better than the CC...not sure what grilled chicken dude is suggesting here)

I've seen posts over the years where the consistent comment about from guys who've tried it, say that CC's are usually too dark and rounded in LP's. If you decide to try it, keep in mind Customs work well with a variety of magnets.

Yup, I've tried every custom variation (outside of the 8).

The CC sounds great in a Les Paul. Especially if you have a bright amp. If you checkout the Whitesnake DVD from 2005ish, Doug Aldrich has a CC in the bridge of his gold top Les Paul.

Thanks, that’s a good point. I do tend to dial my amps in a little on the bright side.
