Let me clarify...they cover a lot of the same sonic ground and the output is very similar. However, when I said the Frankie had the "edge", I meant it...it's a slightly more open sounding pickup with less emphasis on the low-mids than the Custom Custom. I've owned both and had them in the same guitar(s).
I typically find the Custom Custom a bit too smooth, personally, and the Frankie adds in just enough spank, bite and bark without being unnecessarily "bright". Definitely the more balanced and superior pickup of the two in my opinion (and it sounds fine in your typical Les Paul, certainly better than the CC...not sure what grilled chicken dude is suggesting here)
