Celestion Alnico Gold

No, I haven't heard them yet, but they're supposed to be like Celestion Blue's with a higher 50W rating, rather than 15W.

I'd LOVE to have a set of these in my Gibson Goldtone GA-30RVS combo!
$280 a pop!!! Eeesh that's a ton of money!

Re: Celestion Alnico Gold

I have heard and tried them and I tink they are close but they lack a bit of top and a fair amount of the compression character that I really liek tboua the Blue...

I like the sound of the Blue's but I think they'd buckle under the wattages my combos put out. I'd want these speakers for a Chieftain and Goldtone, and those things dish out a lot of low end thump. These Gold's would handle it better. I'm just looking for something sweeter sounding than my current Vin 30's. Those speakers work great with the Bogner, but they seem too aggressive in the mids for my combos, which I use for clean/midgain.

What Eminence would be closer to what I want?.....basically killer British cleans.

Re: Celestion Alnico Gold

Red Fang is Emi's take on a Celestion Blue - supposed to be a really sweet speaker.

The Eminence Blue Clone is called a Red Fang, it's rated higher than the Blue and lower than the Gold, they are rated at 30 watts and by all counts they are nice but I haven't tried them yet. As for the Blues and Golds I still think that a big bottom amps like your Chieftian might be too much...I recently heard and played a Chieftian through a V30/H30 (Dr. Z Z-Best cab) and was amazed but the tones I was able to get and everything seemed perfect...no harsh high/high mids and loads of clarity.

Re: Celestion Alnico Gold

And they're sure cheaper!

What happened to the days when things were priced normally? $280 for a speaker seems insane to me.....especially when buying more than one!

Yeah, I've had real good results with H30s in amps/cabs where the V30's midrange hump shows through too much.

Good to hear the gold actually exists. I was beginning to think they didn't exist outside of review samples...

Re: Celestion Alnico Gold

I'm thinking the H30 might be more what I'm looking for. I'd like to have 3 of them. One for the Matchless, one for the Goldtone, and one for the Bogner 2-12 cab. They'd all be mated with one Vin 30. I could just sell a couple of the Vin 30's to recoup most of the cost.

I can't ever imagine a time when I'd be spending $560 on 2 speakers.
I have a hard time believing Alnico is = gold/diamonds/rubies!

Re: Celestion Alnico Gold

Joe a V30/H30 combo is damn hard to beat...nice fat sweet lows and overlall thickness with a little compression from the H30 while the V30 gives you cut clarity and more defination that some guys can get with just H30's.

Re: Celestion Alnico Gold

Yeah, I should sell a few of my Vin 30s, and parlay the money into 2 H-30's.
I probably won't touch anything on the Matchless, since it's such a valuable amp. I don't want to disturb the original soldering on the original speakers which have "Matchless labels."

I'll just put an H30 in the Goldtone and Bogner 2-12. That cab will sound amazing.

You matchless doesn't have mismatched Celestion/Matchless speakers already??? I was under the impression that they all came like that and always had...one H30 and one Greenback...

Re: Celestion Alnico Gold

The Emi are cool, if you look around, you can still find the Eminence 122 quite cheap. This was their alnico b4 they got all fancy... The 35 watt version is what you want, I have seen them in the 35.00 range used, when they pop up. Make sure it is the 35 watt version ( blue frame, I believe) vs the 20 watt black frame.

Re: Celestion Alnico Gold

I'd love to hear one after playing a Blue in my buddy's Princeton. That speaker sounds like heaven!

I'm not sure what they put in their combos now, but Sampson era ones had 2 Vintage 30's, where one was stock, and the other had the 'doping' treatment with the acetone on the edge of the cone. I've always liked Vin 30's, but I'm really interested in mixing them with H30's. I'm just lazy about that stuff because if it sounds fine already, what's the point of changing speakers? I'm still interested in this Celestion Gold too.

Yeah, it's a hard thing to envisage by yourself too. I'm fortunate in that my Splawn/Matamp importer friend also imports celestions, and has several cabs with different options, tied to a cabinet switcher. It's really opened my eyes to what different speakers can do.

Fair enough, I spoke with Phil Jamison about 2 months ago and he informd me that Matchless 2x12 combos now come with mismatched Celestions...

Anyway, try the H30/V30 mix...it really is a great match for almost everything!

I wish guitar speaker dealers had the same sort of setup as an auto stereo display. It's be great to push buttons on a wall and hear your amp coming through a choice of all the Celestions, Eminence, Weber, Jensen etc.

It'd be an interesting experiment to take a 4-12 cab and load it with all the popular Celestions, then on the back, create a panel of mini-switches, for any single speaker or mix of speakers you want.

Re: Celestion Alnico Gold

My friend's cab switcher is pretty cool, seeing as he has about 8 cabs loaded with various speakers. Matamp have exactly the setup you describe at their plant.

Re: Celestion Alnico Gold

I think a cool invention would be a jackplate that fits onto the back of 4-12's with either a rotary knob or switches, so that combinations of any 4 mismatched speakers could be accessed.......and have them all fall into the same ohms rating!
