Celestion Seventy-80

what are the tonal characteristics of this speaker? One came stock in my Crate V1512 and I am thinking of replacing it, but I don't know what parts of the sound are from the speaker and what is from the amp. It seems like the V1512 is a little bit too bright, I like some nice chime but it seems a little harsh sometimes. If anyone has a good description of the seventy-80's sound or a recommendation of a slightly smoother, warmer speaker that still has pretty clear highs. please chime in

also something with a lower power rating would be nice, since a 75 watt speaker in a 15 watt amp seems a little much, and id like just a tad bit of breakup when I crank the volume up.

Re: Celestion Seventy-80

I have one in my Crate V16. I found it to be harsh and beamy: no matter what I tried (messing with the treble control, installing a Weber beam blocker), I could never dial out the harshness. On top of that it can also be a bit boomy.

Ever cabinet I've plugged the Crate into sounds better: an old Roland JC 120 (stock speakers), Weber Blue Dogs, and Scumback Greenback clones.

Re: Celestion Seventy-80

Try playing one with a tone tubby speaker in it, possibly the 30 watter. The tone tubby one is suppose to be a hemp cone copy of the greenback and licenses out the cone to eminance with the cannabis rex. So that might be a worthwhile speaker upgrade.

Re: Celestion Seventy-80

I was originally going to get the V1512 with a tone tubby stock, but it got back-ordered and I ended up just buying the standard version. I've been considering getting one but they are so dang expensive by themselves. Maybe I could just get one of the cannabis rex speakers though, are they as good?

Re: Celestion Seventy-80

Im thinking that the ceramic tone tubby would sound better in my crate, anyone know how different it is from the cannibus rex? the Tone Tubby is about $50 more, but im kinda tempted to go for it once I get my paycheck.
