Celestion seventy/80's ~> any good?

Re: Celestion seventy/80's ~> any good?

I think almost any Celestion will usually sound better than just about any stock generic speaker. Compared to most generic 12's the Modern Lead 70 and Classic Lead 80 will outperform them. But compared to my favorite Celestions ( G12H30, Vintage 30 and G12M Greenback) I think the Modern Lead 70 sounds a liitle to smooth and bland. The Classic 80 though is a favorite of mine...kind of a cleaner, more neutral sounding speaker with less crunch and honk to the tone than Celestions are normally thought of as having. Eric Johnson used Classic 80's for a while. Lew

thanks lew ..

when it comes to 12's I lean towards lower wattage speakers ..Vin 30's and greenbacks mostly .not too stoked on the 75's or 100's as they dont break up enough for me .. and have yet to peep the 80's.

.. I am not sure the 70/80's will be warm enough for me..

G1280s are my favorite speakers for rock, been using them for a long time. They don't add or take anything away from the sound and they're very articulate. I've never had a failure either.

Yeah...I like them too. Had them in my '82 JCM-800 50 watt combo amp. Great speakers, as you said.

However, if it's smooth tone Orbiter is after, the Modern Lead 70's I sort of dissed earlier might actually be an appropriate choice. They are very, very smooth! I just happen to like the more classic Celestion crunchy honk better.

I've never tried the 70s but I agree with you on the 80s, if you're looking for that mid range honk they're not what you need.

Re: Celestion seventy/80's ~> any good?

thanks mucho for the imput..

I was asking about the seventy/80's in particular because I was considering taking a trade for a traynor 2x12 w/ these seventy/80's in it ...

seventy 80

the last thing I need is another cab that I dont use .. as I already have a 4x12 w/ the 75's .. it sits out in the garage . been itching for a 2x12 .. but outside the vin 30's and greenbacks I havent been too hyped on the celestions I've tried... bottom line is I didnt wanna trade for a cab I'd have to swap speakers before I could use it ..

sounds like the G12H 30 watters might be something I'd like tho..
