This is pretty much directed at Scott_F but owners of this amp feel free to speak up.

Is this a more or less exact JTM 45 copy (in "sweet" mode)? What transformers do you use in these? What exactly does the ***** switch *do*?

Owners, what do you like/dislike about these amps? Try and describe the sound.

The website gives a decent description of the amp models. Scott basically took a decent amp design for each model and tweaked it in his own elfin magical way.

I own an Edana. I don't have any actual JTM-45 experience, so I can't tell you how comparable it is to the real deal old school JTM-45. I will say that it gets me closer to sounds that Angus makes when I use the right guitar and crank the amp. The sweet upper-mid heavy sound is 75% of the reason I wanted this amp. It also approximates the Peter Green sound quite well. I LOVE THIS AMP. This amp has stunning fender-like cleans and yet it gets nice and dirty too. I have not been able to dial in both sounds with an ABY pedal yet. I'm still working on it. I wish I could change the EQ to suit each channel, but there is only one EQ set on the amp and I wouldn't change it's structure if that would change the sound.

The sweet mode is pretty much straight ahead JTM-45 from what I can tell. Beyotch mode is like a cross between a plexi and a JTM-45 with more midrange punch. Both are great to play around with. Transformers are Heyboer I think. This amp has tons of bass. I cranked up a 100 Watt traynor YCS head through the Edana cab and it was loud, but didn't have half the bass of the Edana head and didn't cause the drop ceiling at work to rain down particulate matter everywhere. The Edana caused the drop ceiling to just about disintegrate. It has huge bass and it gets a sweet bluesy tone when cranked. You have to watch the pickups and the EQ when cranked because it can get muddy. I tend to use hot bright guitars when cranking it as that approximates the "angus" sound best.

I think Scott is using Mercury Magnetics transformers exclusively, but he may have started that after Gr8Scott's amp was built.

ive heard that as well. i think both my celtics have the heyboer trannys and they are good but mercury is a name that people recognize and might be a selling point above and beyond just having a hand wound american transformer.

as far as i know the edana is pretty close to the jtm 45 formula

Yeah, Scott recently mentioned going with Mercury exclusively. He gave me the choice of Mercury or Heyboer, but I wanted my amp to be a Cadillac, so I went with Mercury.

Are there any clips of the Edana on Scott's website?

i have amps with mercury and heyboer and honestly i dont know if there is much difference in quality. mercury does give lots of options for tuning the amp but i dont think the heyboer are any less good sounding. i tried three output transformers in my celtic aislin 6l6 and i kept the heyboer in there, over the mm and a mojo. all sounded good but slightly different, little more or less bottom, little more or less top end, little more or less crunch

So if I wanted one amp that would do the whole keith richards dirty tweed sound, which celtic would suit that the best? If I wanted one for hendrix type stuff, which one?

For Hendrix stuff, I would probably go with the Edana. It does the marshall thing well when cranked. It's the ultimate marshall sound to me. Especially in Beyotch mode. It's awesome with a strat and great with bright humbuckers. Mine loves single coils the most to my ears. It has this great bell-like wailing blues tone that is reminiscent of SRV, but slightly more marshally. Really great tone.

I think the MM thing is more marketing than anything else, not that they make an inferior product at all. They do make the magical 65 London OT, after all...

Thanks guys, I'm quite sure I will be getting this head. Soon as I can get the cash together. Seems like a hell of a deal. And really I don't care what name the TF is as long as it sounds great - like an old JTM - and holds up.

I wonder if I'll still get that punch out of a 2x12" and this amp. I have an 80s Marshall 1966a 2x12" coming.. it's square, with the speakers in opposite corners, looks sort of like a smaller (and MUCH lighter) angled 4x12". I guess it would be about the size of a 4x10".

The speakers are G12T-75s, which are supposed to be scooped sounding and will probably be replaced quickly.

I own both the Franklin and Edana and Scott was kind enough to post some of my poor playing on www.celticamplifiers.com (Under CLIPS) so that anyone could hear my attempts to make music.

Edana is featured under four clips. which I madde to show the clean, blues nature of this amp. It can also play AC/DC, Hendrix and SRV with ease. (I will post some more clips with heavier tone (Think SRV playing Jimi) soon...)

All in all, a great amp that easily compares to the earlier Bluesbreaker / JTM45 Marshalls. It can have it's channels jumped for a broader tonal range, which is how I use it (With a jumper cord or Radiak 'Bigshot ABY switcher, dependent on what I am looking for.)

Those first two clips were made at home using a Fender Stratocaster fitted with Seymour Duncan pups. The third was recorded as a guitar lesson using a karokie clip in the background for a student of mine. The last was recorded live by my wife on a Sony DCR-TRV40 camcorder - the break occurred because she was not sure if the camcorder was recording or not and is about a 6~7 second breaking sound.

All four speakers are Celestion G12-75's.

G12H30 mojotone clones. It's called the BV-30H.

It's not a 4x12. It's an open back 2x12.

At the 2007 Amp Show, there was a whole panel of amp gurus sitting at a long table, fielding questions from the audience. The topic of transformers came up, and the whole panel unanimously agreed that Mercury makes the best transformer. I'm sure many of them like others, especially Heyboer and Hammond, but they all shook their heads in agreement on Mercury Magnetics.

Dan Boul from 65 Amps even coughed "Mercury-cough cough" Sort of a joke.
