Celtic Edana

Re: Celtic Edana

Which had more crunch?

the heyboer. the mm was the cleanest, the heyboer was a little crunchier with a little less high end, the mojo was less crunchy than the heyboer but more than the mm with a slightly smaller frequency response.

they all sounded great

Re: Celtic Edana

They are wired differently for one thing. Not a major difference, but enough that I haven't bothered going for the EL-34's. Why change something I love just the way it is with the KT-66 tubes. In my experience, the KT-66 tubes have much better cleans with better bass and they still have lots of great upper mid heavy grind when you crank them. Much more versatile this way.

Re: Celtic Edana

Yeah I've always leaned toward the KT66s.

I also hear the KT66s give this amp less power? (which could be a good thing)

Would you say that its more of tight and bright fenderish bass???

Thanks man, maybe I will try one in my Laney, I love it know but I dont know for some reason I am jonesing to see what weill made today's tranny with more crunch will do to it.

Re: Celtic Edana

kt66 pin out is like a 6l6 which is similar to an el34 but the el34 needs something that a 6l6 doesnt so i think you can put a 6l6 type tube into an el34 socket with just a rebias but i you cant put an el34 into a 6l6 socket without some modification, maybe a screen resistor?

IRRC and with a quick look at the tube data sheets, the KT-66 and 6L6 have identical pin arrangements with pin #1 un-used. On the EL-34, pin #1 is used for the suppressor grid. It is typically tied to the cathode (pin #8), but not always! (Can't remember which Canadian amp maker it is, but at least one connected the suppressor grid to the raw bias supply.) Anyway, for an EL-34, pin #1 must be connected to either ground, the cathode (same thing) or the bias supply.

Other than that, there is a potential problem with substituting an EL-34 in many amps because pin #1 is frequently used as a tie point for a component such as a screen resistor or grid stopper. Bottom line, have a tech look inside your amp before you put an EL-34 in a socket for any other tube. Depending on what's tied down there, BAD THINGS can happen.

But Scott already knows all this - he may very well wire up his amps allowing for an EL-34 substitution.

One last consideration while swapping power tubes: the KT-66 only needs 1.3 amps of heater current, while the EL-34 needs 1.5 amps. Doesn't sound like much, but it's per tube so your power trannie needs to be able to supply an extra 0.4 amps of heater current (assuming 2 tubes). Probably not a big deal for these two tubes, but could be a problem if the PT's heater current capability is already maxed out. On the other hand, a 6V6 only needs 0.45 amps per tube. Something to keep in mind before you swap power tube types...

Re: Celtic Edana

Okay; now, what about KT66s vs. EL34s?

What are the main differences?

The KT66's sound somewhat smoother...w/o as much aggressive breakup vs. EL34's. More "round", and organic sounding...I'm using Tung-Sol 66's in my 2204 right now. In my case, it was just plug & play, with a little re-bias. I think the next tube change...I'll go back to EL34's...I like the breakup a little better than the KT66's. But still, the KT's are great sounding tubes.

I have been using and pushing GEC KT 66 for years, but I have never heard about Tung-Sol 66's - until I checked Vacuum Tube Valley.

Those tubes are not the same (Regardless of the ad) as GEC KT-66 tubes.

Tone difference is that while they do sound nice, the GEC are more mellow and with clearer bass and headroom.

In either case, KT-66's are better sounding tubes than 5881, 6L6, 6550, and EL-34.

Well...there you have it....

Re: Celtic Edana

what larry forgets is that those **** gecs are expensive!! its hard to stomach $400+ for a pair but if i was more well heeled id probably do it

now if you wanna loan me a pair so i can hear the difference for myself... :naughty:

Jeremy, for you , I just might be able to do exactly that. PM me for further details...

Re: Celtic Edana

Mercury magnetics going into anything tweed I make. Heyboer stays in the Edana because, well because they sound really really good and I've not had one fail yet. And on the Franklin I use a really highend boutique maker in SoCal that generates special trannies for guys that make EL84 amps.

I really hope to get back into production again soon. I miss it a lot but have had other priorities that are way more important. Hopefully I can find a bit of balance back into my personal force.

(Nice geek speak, huh?)
Thanks for the kind words.
