changing a pickup's magnet ?

is it possible ? how easy is it to do ? and how money-friendly is getting a guy to do it compared to buying a new one and having a guy install it ?

thing is, i have an sh-11 in my guitar and wanted something a bit more punchy for rythm playing. i just had the idea of replacing its A2 magnet with an A5 or a ceramic bar. any idea on what would the differences be ?

Meanwhile i do it while watching TV. A A5 makes a more scooped sound - not bad for rhythm. An A8 brings more bass and low mid and a tad more highs - better for all around including leads. But for real serious rhythm work i would go more to the vintage side.

Check out old threads on this. It's a 10 minute process, including loosening strings & retuning. Sure beats spending the money on a new PU, which may not sound any better than what you have now.

The Custom platform is very versatile. Duncan makes it with an A2, A5 & ceramic (CC, C5, and Custom). Some of us put an A8 in and make a wildcat "C8" which has the mids of a CC, but with more output and treble, and a tighter low end.

Wymore Guitars.com has magnets. Most are $5. I always get $50 worth for the free shipping, but I also want to have everything I need on hand for upcoming projects. Depends on how many HB & P-90 PU's you have.

ideas on how different these may be? seymour duncan sells all 3 versions of the pickup you mentioned as different pickups( a5 C5, a2 CC, and ceramic Custom)

The C5 came about as a result of customers swapping mags. It can be a little delicate in some ways but on the whole, it's a pretty easy mod and certainly a lot cheaper than a new pickup.
