Changing Color-Plates on Humbuckers -- Easy or Difficult?

I've never done this before, so I'd appreciate if anyone could tell me whether it's 'no-sweat-easy' or a 'pain-in-the-***-difficult' !!

I have a Pearly-Gates-Plus, which of course, is ONLY made in WHITE-- but I need it to be in BLACK-- AND, I DO have some other Black Trembuckers [I assume the PG+ pole spacing is the same as Trembucker pole spacing?]-- so my question is, can I swap the white plates from the PG+ w/ the black plates from a TB ??? If so, how can I do it? I've NEVER taken a humbucker/trembucker apart before !! Thanks for ANYTHING that anyone feels moved to contribute !!

They are not just plates on top. The colored part is the entire pickup bobbin with windings. An answer to your issue is likely something called a bobbin topper. I don't have a link but you can do a web search or maybe somebody will post one. It's a thin plastic piece that sticks onto the top of the existing bobbin and they are available in many colors.

john is right about the bobbin toppers.

the pg+ is normal spaced not trembucker spaced and like john said the color is of the bobbin itself which is a very integral part of the pup that cannot be changed.

Thanks, guys, for the clarification-- & John, thanks especially for coming back w/ the link-- that was really nice AND helpful of you-- I'm going there now-- & Jeremy, thanks for tipping me off to the normal-spacing of the PG+ instead of the TB-spacing-- both of you guys have been a tremendous help, resulting in a QUICK & EASY solution to what I'd feared might have been a BIG problem!! Hey, this Forum really works!! ha ha :-)

Re: Changing Color-Plates on Humbuckers -- Easy or Difficult?

Jeremy, thanks again for the tip about PG+ not being TB-spaced-- but now that I've got to order the bobbin toppers (@ universaljems.com) I've got to select between 'F-Spaced' vs. 'Standard-Spaced' -- is 'F-Spaced' the same as 'TB-Spaced' & therefore NOT what I should order? Man, this can get confusing!! :-) But seriously, PG+: which do I go for-- F-spacing or standard?

Chester is 70 miles NW of NYC, in Orange County ("mid-state" NY) in a region called the Hudson Valley-- some more-well-known neighboring towns are Monroe, Newburgh, Goshen, Middletown, Warwick, & of course, West Point . . . used to be rural around here (30-40 years ago) but the last 20 years has really become what you'd call "suburban"

F-Spaced/TB-spaced mean the same thing.

Re: Changing Color-Plates on Humbuckers -- Easy or Difficult?

a normal spaced bucker should be about 49mm spacing or just under 2", a trembucker (or f spaced) should be a little over 52mm or just over 2".

measure just to be sure but im 99% sure about the pg+ being normal spaced

Re: Changing Color-Plates on Humbuckers -- Easy or Difficult?

Thanks, Jeremy & Mike -- sure enough, measured PG+ is just < 2" -- actually ~ 1-15/16"

You guys are the greatest! Thanks again!
