Changing Pickup Magnets?

Hi All,
Folks in these forums talk about changing pickup components, mostly the magnets.

Where are folks getting an A5 or A2 magnet or whatever else is popular to try?

Welcome to the forum! One of the most popular places to buy from is Wymore Guitars, www.wymoreguitars.com. A great place to also buy various parts like pots & caps, etc, if you're really into tweaking your guitar. John is also a member, and posts from time to time, as well.

My question is, HOW do you swap magnets? I have a Seth neck and '59 neck and I think I want to switch the magnets between the two. Doesn't it mean taking the whole pickup apart? How can you be sure to not over or under wind them back up?

You just have to loosen the coils from the plate. Heat it with a blow dryer, unscrew the little screws that hold the bobbins in place, and use a screwdriver to push the magnet out; I usually orient the replacement magnet at that point using the one that's still partially in the pickup, and then slide it in, pushing the original the rest of the way out. I might be forgetting a couple steps, but I don't think so.

You need a small magnet to determine the polarity/direction of the magnets. I use one of those little screwdrivers that have a small magnet molded into the tip. Anything that's magnetic (but weak enough not to affect the main mag) can be used.

Before disassembly, use this magnet to determine which bobbin it's attracted to, the slug or screw polepieces, and make sure when you install the new magnet, this attraction is the same.
