changing pole pieces on a jb?

Hi there all, after reading many reviews and fora articles i've decided to buy a set of jb/jazz 7 string pups for my ibanez rg 1527. Now there's still on trouble on my mind. The pole pieces or screw lenght from a duncan humbucker is to long to fit in the pickup cavity. This leaves me with 3 options.

1 route the pickup cavity, actually don't feel much for that...
2 clipp of the pole pieces, i've read this is standard operation to fit a duncan in a ibanez
3 screw in some shorter screws, i've read somewhere in the q&a that that is possible, looks to me like the easiest and cleanest solution...

Will, and if yes: how?, it alter the sound of the humbucker? And can i really just buy some new screws and put them in the pup?

cheers, Lennart

Re: changing pole pieces on a jb?

I'd remove the polepieces and clip/grind them off a little shorter. Lew

My only reservation with clipping them would be if you dislike the sound, you may not be able to trade them back to Duncan. If this is not a concern, just cut them.

#2 is what I had to do with my Custom/Jazz set for my RG1527. Also, I had to round off the corners of the mounting brackets on the pickups. As far as what effect does clipping the ends of the pole pieces have, I was told by the Duncan rep that it would make the pickups slightly hotter due to the magnetic pull being focused more toward the strings. He also said that it would not void the 21 day exchange policy. For that second part, I would double check if I were you, just to be on the safe side.

Re: changing pole pieces on a jb?

thanks for the help so far! Yeah, i probably go for the easy way out-> clipping the pole pieces... Don't have to worry about the exchange policy since these things aren't available in europe :grumble:

and Travis, could you possibly give me any comparison between the jb and the custom. I've set me mind on the jb because of it's versatilty, clean and driven sounds. And I chose it over an custom because I can't stop thinking that's a dimarzio tone zone clone... But i still have my doubts because many people find the jb trebly in any wood other than mahogany.
