Changing pup color

Weird question, client owns a white jaguar pup and he wants me to make it black but isn't interested in a new pup or changing the cover. He seriously told me to use a black magic marker to paint it black.

I've told him that I don't expect that it will turn out well so he can paint it black before I install the pup but he seems irritated.

Anyone tried this before?

Let him know that you don't let stuff leave your place looking like that. He can use a black marker, but if you are going to do it, it will be done correctly.

Good feedback guys...
Thanks for the toppers site... They have a lot more variety than I was aware of.

Yes - idiot request will be met with blame on you after ridicule. If he complains you wouldn't do it, people will just laugh at him behind his back because they know he is an idiot.

The customer is not always right, but they are always the customer. And you don't want every/some customers at all.

Re: Changing pup color

I've used those toppers before. They are pretty thick but they're sturdy and last a long time. The adhesive sticks like crazy so you have to be very careful to place them perfectly on the first try or you won't be able to correct them.

Not according to "Deny". :lmao:

seriously - I'm gonna spend a crap ton on that site. LOVE how they index by brand!!!!!!

Re: Changing pup color

I wonder if you could just dip it in liquid latex, then peel it off later if he doesn’t like it?

Re: Changing pup color

New cover seems the best solution to me. I didn't know there were bobbin stickers for Jaguar pickups, that's cool.

If he insists he doesn't want a new cover, I think paint would be a better option than magic marker or latex dip.
There's rattle can paint specifically made for plastic.

Re: Changing pup color

Can't you just replace the jaguar pickup cover with a black one?
Yeah that was my original suggestion but he didn't want to spend the $. In his defense, we're getting big bucks for the electronic modification and I think he may simply be out of $ and more interested in the sound than the look. So I'm seriously thinking I'm going to spring for a cover and give it to him gratis... As Mincer said we want to make sure our mods look and sound good.

Re: Changing pup color

I’d double check with the customer before buying/swapping the cover.
Maybe he won’t be on board for some reason we can’t fathom...

Re: Changing pup color

I would just throw in the black cover gratis. It only costs a couple bucks but will generate a ton of good will (which means more referrals and more paying customers).

Re: Changing pup color

Paint will chip if he uses the guitar, even plastic paint. If it's a wall decoration painting isn't a problem. I've been down the "pickup color" rabbit hole a few times in the last 2 years. Trust me when I say DiMarzio Cream isn't even close other mfg. cream. Argh !!

Re: Changing pup color

I painted a plastic pick guard (was doing the Michael Schenker thing) and used this spray paint meant for plastics. It went on solid and hasn't chipped off yet. I think you would want to strip any grease or wax from the bobbins first.

If you do replace it with a black pickup cover, tell him that you did it with a sharpie. And it took a REALLY LONG TIME TO GET RIGHT. He'll be in awe of you.
