Changing Speaker Impedence

Empty Pockets

BadHairDayologist
I've got a 68 Fender Bassman head, with the output impedence reading 4 ohms. I bought a 4x12 SUNN cabinet for it several months ago and it sounds great, but its output impedence is 16 ohms!

Now I read in a post a while back that somebody had a switch on one of their 4x12 speaker cabinets that switches it from 16 ohms to 4 ohms. I've been trying to figure it out and it doesn't make any sense to me. Do any of you guys know how could I make my 16 ohm cabinet 4 ohms? Would a speaker change be necessary or could i just rewire it?

Thanks bros.

Re: Changing Speaker Impedence

Well, first of all you want to look at the individual speakers, what impedance are they. When you wire two speakers in series you add the impedance together, when you wire two speakers in parallel you divide the impedance by two. So, if you have four 4 ohm speakers in series you have 16 ohms, so you want a set in series, wired in parallel with another set in series.... That is, if they are 4 ohm speakers.

Z-Matcher would be cool if i had more than one head and cab...ha. Guess I'll have to open up the SUNN before I can solve this problem eh? Guess I know what to do tomorrow morning.

Re: Changing Speaker Impedence

They're probably 16 ohm speakers wired in series-parallel. Change it to parallel.
