Changing the speaker on a Marshall JCM2000 TSL601 combo

i want to change the wolverine speaker on my TSL601 combo with either a Celestion Vintage 30 or with a celestion G12T75...............which one suits better the tsl? I mostly use high gain sounds(3rd channel on the TSL....no stompboxes for distortion i only use the amps gain i hate scooped EQ no nu metal/metal) and i also need good clean sounds.

Is there a difference between a 16ohm speaker or a 8 ohm speaker tonewise?????

IMO the V30 doesn't sound so good in an open backed cab, such as your combo-all mids, no lows.

Why are you considering different impedence for your speaker? If you have a tube amp, you have to match your speaker impedence to the amp's output or you'll end up frying your amp. To answer your question, a speaker of the same make usually don't show any big difference between 8 ohm or 16 ohm impedence tonewise, however the sound level may be less on the 16 ohm one. Don't try this on your tube amp unless you can switch the amp to match the impedence.

The TSL has on the back pannel a switch to choose between 8 ohm or 16 ohm so i suppose i can look for both over ebay.....sometimes a 16ohm speaker comes up sometimes an 8 ohm.........just more chances to find one......

I do not want to sacrifice low end or anything else I just want a fuller and less muddy sound than the sound i get with the crappy wolverine speaker that comes with the TSL601...............i am not an expert on speakers so i am open to any suggestions other than the vintage 30 or the g1275t

If you're looking for a clean sound, you're having the wrong amp. Marshall is good for overdrive but not famous for clean sounds. Their amps are mostly designed to go to distortion readily when pushed. This is not just the speaker itself, but the amp as well. Changing tha speaker alone may not get you the expected results.

I think the Vintage 30 would sound great in that amp and it's rated at 60 watts. Use your bass control and you'll have plenty of bass. It's an exageration to say that it's all mids and no lows...it has plenty of lows, and IMO, many guitarists use to much bass anyway and step all over the bass player's sonic territory.

There are others that have more lows though: the G12H30 for one. But it's rated at 30 watts.

Another good choice might be the Celestion Classic 80. That's a speaker Eric Johnson used to use alot. It has a nice full tone and is rated at about 80 watts. lew

Well like I said it was my opinion, and my own testing has proved this out, at least to my ears-but the Celestion.com site also mentions this- in the section-"What is the difference between open and closed-back cabinets? I don't disagree that the Vintage 30 has less bass than some other Celestions and that it sounds deeper and fuller in a Marshall 4 x 12 bottem than it does in a small open back cab. But I use one in a Deluxe Reverb and also one in a 40 watt open back 1 x 12 combo amp my brother built: the Mission Crusader. It sounds killer in both amps. It's an exageration to say that it has no lows because it has plenty of lows...just not as much low end in an open back cab as a G12H30 would have. Lots of people use a Vintage 30 in open back cabs. A pair in a Twin Reverb can be very cool and I've used them in JCM 800 combo amps with great results too. I like to pair the Vintage 30 with a speaker like the Classic 80 or G12H30 though. Also, IMO, the Vintage 30 has better bass response than the Greenback...and you see the Greenback being used alot in open back cabs like the Vox AC-30. Lew

Regarding the large magnet comment in that quote, the G12H30 has the same large magnet as the Vintage 30! Plenty of bass from the G12H30 in open back cabs...in fact, it's Ken Fischer's favorite speaker in a Deluxe Reverb, and mine too. Lew

I agree with ya there, Lew-for some reason, the H30's sound great in my JCM602 combo-and the G12H30 has become my speaker of choice. But I just wasn't very happy with the V30's in there, to my ears, the G12H30 is very musical sounding. Too bad they are only rated for 30 watts. If they could only up the wattage on those, without changing the tone....sigh!
But Fenderiarhs was asking for opinions, and I was sharing some of my personal experiences. Plus, I hate to see people spend a hundred bucks or so, and then be unhappy, or not get what they were looking for.

I'll tell ya! The G12H30 is my favorite ceramic magnet Celestion. What do you think is the closest to it in terms of a speaker that will handle 60 watts or more? Would that be the Vintage 30? :smack:

I dunno- I've been tempted to try out some of those Eminance (sic)speakers to see if they come closer to the H30 than the V30- had any experience with those yet? BTW I do use the V30's in my 4x12 cab, and I'm perfectly happy with them.

well i know the tsl has not fender cleans but still it has some good acceptable cleans (and one of the best out of the marshall range)........i just do not want to loose that clean sound when swapping the speaker

I used to have a 1936 cab with the T75s, and I had no problem with it, alot of folks claim that they have a scooped mid, but I really didn't notice it all that much. It seems to be the speaker that alot of hard rock/heavy metal guys prefer. Remember that mids and highs are easier for a speaker to reproduce than lows, and most Marshall amps seem to have plenty of mids and highs anyway.
I really recommend that you go to the Celestion.com site and use the tone selector to try and find what you are looking for- also, check any Marshall amp forums you can find to see what is being said about different speaker setups. Also compare the frequency charts at Celestion, to get an idea of what sounds like what. Good luck in your quest!

I dunno- I've been tempted to try out some of those Eminance (sic)speakers to see if they come closer to the H30 than the V30- had any experience with those yet? BTW I do use the V30's in my 4x12 cab, and I'm perfectly happy with them.

Evidently the Eminence Wizard is closest to the G12H30 and is 75 watts. I guess the Private Jack is Greenback flavored and the Governor is Vintage 30 flavored. They've got alot to choose from that's for sure. There's a review I came across by Tonequest at the Eminence site.
