Charvel Production Model Review

My Charvel San Dimas production guitar is 1 year old today so I thought I would post a review. I started off ordering a black San Dimas and instead the music store sent me a black So-Cal. Since they messed up my order and I had to wait several weeks for the San Dimas in my color to arrive, they offered me a sweet deal on both... so I bought both for only $1550.

After a few months I swapped my JB/59 for the Tone Zone/Evolution of my So-Cal thinking that the Dimarzios would sound better directly mounted to the body... and it did so I kept it that way.

I sold the So-Cal with the Seymour Duncans and continued playing the San Dimas with Dimarzios for a while and finally swapped out the Evolution neck for an Air Norton. I sold that guitar a couple of weeks ago for $400. That's basically the story of my experience with those guitars. Here's what I have to say about them.

The Good:

- Neck looks nice and feels nice to play
- The Dimarzios and Seymour Duncans are great pickups
- The Floyd Rose trem is not bad
- The fretwork and body paint is pretty nice
- Good sustain

The Bad:

- Frets wore fast even though I only played it a couple of hours a week
- Floyd Rose must not be OFR because it does not stay in tune as well as my Custom Shop Charvel
- The JB/59 sounds better in the So-Cal and the Tone Zone/Evolution sound better in the San Dimas
- The fretwork isn't the best I've seen. My fender USA strats have better fretwork. I used the bottom of a screwdriver handle to tap the 11th and 16th frets down to reduce string buzz

Production vs Custom Shop:

- No contest. Custom Shop Charvels are plain better than production models. Better wood, better sustain, better frets, better neck, better tremolos.

Overall impression:

- I probably won't buy one again since I already acquired a taste for Charvel custom shop guitars. Knowing that I can get better quality from Fender USA and triple the quality from Charvel custom shop, I can't see my self buying another one.

I'm not saying they are not worth it, but at their price point, Ibanez offers a few prestige models that beat it... except for the pickups. As far as quality my Ibanez RG1570 is clearly a better guitar and I spent roughly the same amount on it as my production model - which was discounted...

Probably my biggest gripe are the frets. I have never had a guitar with frets that wear out so fast. I didn't put a lot of time on that guitar either. I played it mostly for practicing pentatonics and chromatics.

If I had to give it a score, I would give Charvel Production models a 6/10.

Vs Pro Mod:

- I don't know, never played a Pro Mod. I hear they are made in Japan. I respect Japanese quality so I would actually give one a try if the reviews are favorable compared to the production model.

Sorry they did not work out for you. I would put my promods up against CS models any day, and I own some CS Charvels.

Rumor has it that one of the big reasons FMIC moved production overseas was the USA promods were cutting into CS sales.

I didn't say anything about the Promods. I haven't played one yet but I would like to.

Then you don't know anything about Team J Craft.

Re: Charvel Production Model Review

Promods are the "Production Models", USA or MIJ they are all "promods".

The frets on the MIJ guitars are finished better than the USA or even the CS Charvels. My biggest complaint with the USA guitars is the fragile ass paint. I swear if you breath on them hard, they chip.

yes i do know j craft and that does not change my opinion.
I prefer charvels for many reasons over a ibanez
the main thing is the necks,a ibanez does not feel right to me i like the slim C shape with the rolled FB edges of the charvel to the wizards shape.
i also prefer alder and a OFR to basswood and a edge
i prefer the strat body to the jem body
i prefer the non resessed trem route and i
i dont like 24 frets

The Floyd Rose on mine stays in tune perfectly and I rarely if ever have to tune it. I play mine everyday and the frets haven't worn down. Every company has duds. Maybe you got a couple of them.

That could be a possibility. That's why I didn't bash them or anything. I was just trying to give an honest review. I don't use heavy gauge strings either, .009 shouldn't wear down the frets as fast.

When did you buy yours? Maybe the fret wire they used a year ago is different.

Re: Charvel Production Model Review

For the record, the tremolo used on the USA* production Charvels is the same all steel design as the unit stamped in Germany. The arm is slightly different, and I prefer the Schaller arm myself.

The person I spoke to at Floyd Rose told me the tremolos were built using the same steel spec as the Schaller produced units, and even mentioned that the tolerances were tighter because the die was new.

Take a look at the saddles on a German version compared to the Korean, and notice how much tighter the string valley is on the MIK.

(* the MIJ production models have a different part number for the tremolo, so I don't know if it is the same as the USA)

Mine is one of the U.S. San Dimas models. It's one of the purple style 2 (tele) models. I bought it probably close to a year ago when places were blowing them out to make room for the new Jap models.

Re: Charvel Production Model Review

i really love my USA So-Cal... but i can feel it's not in the same league as a CS Charvel of course...

Re: Charvel Production Model Review

So is the concensus that the MIJ Promods are superior to the USA Production?

Not sure where you got that, but the frets are nicer.

In Japan, to work in a quality guitar factory, you have to have graduated from Luthiery school.

Fender in California has people who don't even play guitar on the line.
