Cheap all tube head to mod?

I'm looking for some VERY cheap all tube head to mod... Under 50W if possible. 50W will do but it's still way too loud. By very cheap I mean under 200 USD... It has to have a pretty high gain-ish sound, but be easily modable for less noise (since I assume a cheap tube amp won't sound like a great one), more clarity, etc etc... NOT to bu,y, just wondering what's out there ;) Thanks!

Re: Cheap all tube head to mod?

If I modded it, it'd be with a new speaker and a smoother type of gain, which I can't be arsed to work on right now to be honest. I may ask for mods if anyone knows some, but I'd have no idea where to find them. And the amp is WAY too big in SIZE, modding it won't make anything better :D

Re: Cheap all tube head to mod?

Good luck. The only decent tube amp I can think of anywhere near that price range is a used Sovtek Mig. Keep looking on e-bay, they go from $250-$350

Re: Cheap all tube head to mod?

Yeah I had considered these. But in the US they go for over 350 now and they basically don't exist in Europe :(

nothing-that's pretty near undoable for that kind of money these days unless you stumble on a great deal or are willing to rebuild a burnt-out basket case (in which case you will be buying lots of parts---$$$).

Re: Cheap all tube head to mod?

When people asked this question a while back i used to say grab an old Traynor tube head from the 70's.... They were cheap.... now the prices for them have gone high as well!

Re: Cheap all tube head to mod?

You might be able to find a old Univox (The Butt ugly blue one's:laugh2: ) But $200 for a Tube amp Now in day's ? Your talking slim pickings.:13:

Re: Cheap all tube head to mod?

You said it had to be under 50w. Is 5w ok? If so, there are several amps that will be cheap and are easily modded. They are loud enough to make great practice and recording amps, but they won't hang with a band unless you have a jazz drummer. Epiphone Valve Junior is a great sounding little amp. If you just get the head, they are quiet and have spectacular tone. If you get the combo, they have a noise problem that makes them unsuitable for recording, but they still sound great. Both are imminently modifyable. Lots of space. The hum problems can be fixed in the combo by adding another cap and a resistor or you can cut the heater traces and re-route the heater lines above the PCB. The head will be my next amp purchase...

They´re actually quite common, just nobody is selling tehm because of the high prices of better equipment ;)

Red Bear and Petersburg would also be in that price range....
