Cheap-ish guitar recommendations?

So I've recently saved up some money from working, and I have also been wanting to learn how to do kinda intermediate guitar maintenance things -- changing pickups and stuff like that. I don't want to do this to my nicer guitars in case something goes wrong with it or I don't do it right. With the money I have, I can probably get a guitar and a pickup to start off with. Right now I'm looking at the Jackson JS32 series. I have a budget of about $300 max for the guitar and I play mostly metal. Any recommendations?

I'll definitely have to try some out, I love my LTD Alexi 600. Granted, it's a higher-end Korean model, but it's still the same brand. I've also been considering some Deans but most of the reviews have been hit-or-miss

The Sterling SUB Silo3 is, in my opinion, the best $200 guitar out there. Really a good quality instrument with good electronics and well put together.

Also, give Yamaha Pacificas a shot...

Sent from my iPad using a bunch of electrons, copper, and probably some fiber optic cable

Yep they go under the radar too. You could score something really nice used if you wait.

Oh yeah! Used is the way to go.
Godins are made in Canada and/or the U.S. (depending on year & model), are very good quality, and often sell CHEAP used because no one's heard of them. There is an SDXT on the Tulsa Craigslist right now for $200. I'd buy that in a heartbeat if I needed a guitar.

Used is the way to go. I have noticed prices already coming down on Ebay, heading toward christmas. You would have a wider choice of guitars if you consider used. I have recently picked up a couple of pristine Ibanez RG450's, one for 250, and the other for 200. You have to have a bit of patience when bidding, but great deals are out there. Read the ads carefully, and avoid anything that says "neck repair". Look to make sure there isn't significant wear to the frets/fretboard. I also avoid anything someone has "upgraded" or "Modded". That often translates as "butchered". Cheap used Duncan/Dimarzio pickups seem to be a little scarce on Ebay right now for whatever reason, but I score one occasionally. Again, patience is the key. I might place low bids on 50 things before I win one.

Re: Cheap-ish guitar recommendations?

Washburn is making some kickass guitars for cheap right now.
Also - that Brit brand - Vintage is excellent and low buck.

I have Washburn models, and one Vintage V6. Going to get a Vintage LP with P-90s soon.

I've been very impressed with the new Jacksons–you can get some very cheap brand new that feel and sound awesome for the price.

Jackson is probably in the lead for me right now. I don't want anything with a floyd though, so a lot of the older used dinky's are out.

alot of people have issues with them but i love em but yea.. there are tricks to making them behave properly

I pop 4 springs on them.. level them so that the trem is parallel to the body.. to me, this drastically improves stability at a cost of some responsiveness which is a non-issue as Im not a whammy bar user.. I just love the feel of the trem

I don't have anything against trems, I just don't need one. My Alexi has one and it works perfectly
