cheap OD pedals for heavy metal, shootout

Davey

Goliath of Tone
hit me folks

boss vs ibanez vs whatever.

diferences between OD3, SD1, TS9, TS808, who knows what else.

i do NOT want distortion pedals. only overdrive, to give an already melting amp another kick in the balls

tone diferences between them, how do their fare under HIGH gain, easyness to mod the pedal. post it all here, then lets vault it, when it has served its purpose.

Re: cheap OD pedals for heavy metal, shootout

i own a SD-1 and a MXR Wylde OD. Both have rather similar qualities in sound, but the Wylde has a bit more mids and overall fatter sound.
Since your Laney seems to be rather bright and articulate just as my Engl Sovereign i'd say the Wylde would work very well since it balances out with that kind of amp. Both produce quite similar results in front of high gain amps, the only thing is that the wylde somehow brings out harmonics stronger than the SD-1 when both are set to pretty much the same sound settings.
But in the end you'll have to try and find what works best for you.

Whatever you decide on, IMO you should get one Arion Tubulator (for $10) on the side...absolutely nothing to lose in this deal;)

Re: cheap OD pedals for heavy metal, shootout

I hear good things about the Bad Monkey.Haven't tried one yet. The TS-5 soundtanks can be had cheap and is fairly easy to mod. Got mine modded for more Bass and gain,And to 808 specs. Danelectro Daddy-o's can be had for cheap on evil bay.

Re: cheap OD pedals for heavy metal, shootout

I've owned dozens of overdrives in my playing life. There are dozens more I want to try. It is a never ending quest.
But I keep coming back to my 1981 TS-9.
I also have an old original RAT but I don't know the year. I love the sound of it too, though I guess technically it really isn't an overdrive.
From the sound samples I have listened to, I really want to check ot the G2D Cream Tone.
Also I ordered a FAB Overdrive from Danelectro for $15.

Those who know me, knows i love OD's & Fuzz boxes, but do NOT like flat-out dist. pedals (except for the Expandora)

OD wise . . .

. . . everyone is correct when they say ther SD-1 and ZW44 is simmilar, because Zakk Wylde use dan SD-1 before MXR made him his sig. OD. So, obviously, the ZW44 is a SD-1 clone so to speak w. a few internal mods !

I too have both and prefer the ZW44 - thus i got my SD-1 modded in the UK.
If you are in the UK (Leeds area) get the Spider mod done - fantastic fire-spitting OD NOW !

Also on a budget, and one i highly recommend is the Rocktron Austin Gold OD !

Then, my two fav. OD's for more than a year now, is the Boss BD-2 (very underrated IMHO), ans an 80's vintage RAT (must have the ever important LM308 chip in it)

Me, well, i am not a toobscreemer fan - i have the TS9 Ri, but it does nothing for me !

Avery nice 'gritty' (ie, not smooth) OD that i also use very often is Marshall's very own Bluesbreaker II.
Also, in my eyes, a hugely underrated pedal. (@ only $60.00)

Will post more if i can think of some cheapies . . .

Re: cheap OD pedals for heavy metal, shootout

ok ...

welll

i went to buy two cables...
and went home with four cables and a sd1 for like 65$ total.

this thing hasnt got that much of a boost, that i imagined.. just adds noise.
i'll check out some mods, and if i dont like it, i'll trade it for a ts9

Re: cheap OD pedals for heavy metal, shootout

Yeah, SD-1's don't really work too well for this application.

They sound too solid state, and don't have the smooth top end of a TS. Bass cut + midhump + smooth top end = \m/.

Re: cheap OD pedals for heavy metal, shootout

yea.. the only thing it did, was add insane ammounts of noise and it sounds way too harsh, plus it doesnt boost anything

if you find one cheap try the Wylde OD. You're describing the same Porblem i had with my SD-1. The Wylde OD is warmer, less harsh and a little smoother in the top end.
But if modding is cheaper then go for it.

Re: cheap OD pedals for heavy metal, shootout

yea.. i got most of the parts at home anyway, so it's pretty much free..

i noticed it already has the jrc4558d chip in it, that most people talk about in here.

Re: cheap OD pedals for heavy metal, shootout

Davey,
Consider TS9/TS808 but there is way to work them with Laneys as I found out. Set drive very low and level very high, I have drive on 2, level on 8. IT RIPS. Of course I have no longer availble John Spina mod, but still give it a try you would get unmatched charachter and warmth.

Re: cheap OD pedals for heavy metal, shootout

yea, the dude i bought it off, used a TS-10 and it got real tight
