Cheap pickups / guilty pleasures

Re: Cheap pickups / guilty pleasures

The rusty neck single coil of my very first guitar named Century. Strat-style guitar. That thing could sound so wickedly bluesy especially for slide. LIke if the sound had a blue color. ;) Woody single coil tone.

The pickup had the word GIFMEN stamped on its magnet.

Duncan Performer/Designed Detonator

GFS VEH

Both with A8s.

Re: Cheap pickups / guilty pleasures

The Wilburn Custom Shop version of the Kent Armstrong Mega Distortion. It is an epoxy sealed unit like an EMG and it wails! I am also enthusiastic about the GFS Loudmouth, it sounds like a big, fat and clean single coil with big heavy balls.

Re: Cheap pickups / guilty pleasures

The single coil in the neck of my Ibanez GSA60, cheap powersound pickup but it sounds really good, bluesy, great for slide. No point in replacing it.

Re: Cheap pickups / guilty pleasures

Ibanez V series pickups. Love the ceramic mag neck pickup.

Re: Cheap pickups / guilty pleasures

the pickups that came with my Traditions Strat. its a HSS and the neck and bride really shine. the middle is great for mild and when the bucker is split it makes for a great alternate heavy rhythm sound!

Re: Cheap pickups / guilty pleasures

I just put a GFS Dream 180 in an HSS tele and it's pretty sweet. Has that Gretsch jangle with a bit of bite.

The stock A5's from an Agile AL-3100 are also surprisingly good.

Re: Cheap pickups / guilty pleasures

Randall SL bridge pickup, designed by Egnater and put in all of their cheap Idol series guitars.

Re: Cheap pickups / guilty pleasures

I have three or four Schaller HBs pulled out of Kramers when they went out of business. They have the textured top and black slugs and screws. They sound pretty open and full.

Re: Cheap pickups / guilty pleasures

The GFS vintage 60s are very good, much better than the other GFS pups I've tried.

I've always liked the stock Fender MiM strat pups; little P90s w/ceramic magnets. Fatter & snarlier than a normal strat pup. Along those lines, the Peavey USA Predator pups are similar construction & have a cool sound, as well.

Re: Cheap pickups / guilty pleasures

A Kent Armstrong hot P90. He doesn't make one with this DC resistance value any more.

I'm sure that it began life as a WD Casino dogear bridge PU. I took the original metal cover off so that it would fit under a plastic dogear cover on my Gordon-Smith GS-1. Later, I remounted the bobbin and magnets onto the baseplate from the OEM pickup in my PRS SE One.
