Cheap tube amps selection

Re: Cheap tube amps selection

Honestly, unless it's a practice amp or a nice Fender spring, I almost never use the simple reverbs in the amp anyways. Between the two, I'd rather have a quality, parallel effects loop.

I mostly jam at home and I cant live without reverb honestly speaking!! In that case i also considered the Bassbreaker 007 with a cheap reverb pedal, but it's kinda out of my budget...

Re: Cheap tube amps selection

I'd say go with a Fender Super Champ X2. Sure it's got a digital preamp, but it sounds pretty good, has tube power, and doesn't cost a lot.

Re: Cheap tube amps selection

sounds like you want to explore. I'd just get a Blackstar and try all the sounds in their ISF tone control. The Vox sounds like a Vox. The Marshall sounds like a marshall. The bassbreaker sounds good though. I'd try that too, especially if it can also do the fender cleans which these others cannot do.

The best part about this amp is that is sounds enough like all the others that the OP can explore until he finds out what type of amp really does it for him, then save up for one.

Re: Cheap tube amps selection

What I would get: a Tiny Terror.

But I won't because: my AC4C1 is just fine for the small/master volume practice amp category as far as I need one, esp. after a tube change, and the AC4C1 is quite a bit cheaper. The tube change wasn't 100% necessary, but freed up the EQ controls; they were only good at bass dimed/100% treble rolled off before, the preamp tubes were the culprit.

Besides from the Bassbreaker I would normally thought Fender amps wouldnt do any high gain stuff but dayummm......That super champ.......sounds quite nice to me!! Thanks for the suggestion!!

Getting me a Tiny Terror means that i need at least a 1X12 and a reverb pedal....

Re: Cheap tube amps selection

Quick question guys

Does the Super Champ does high gain stuff well? I cant find a demo using high gain on that amp

Re: Cheap tube amps selection

In the video at the bottom of this page he does a litele high gain. I also saw one on YouTube that had all of the voicings of the Super Champ XD, which is the older version of this amp. One thing I forgot about on the X2 is that you can hook it up to a computer and record silently, or if you download the free software from Fender you can use your computer to change the parameters of the amp voicing and the settings of the effects.

Re: Cheap tube amps selection

IMO, you should go with the Fender Bassbreaker...not quite as genuine "Fender" clean tones BUT still dog gone good for the amount of gain you get out of it.

Re: Cheap tube amps selection

Fender Super Champ X2 would be great. Another great option would be the Vox VT20x or VT40x. Both have a tube preamp and solid state power section like the AV series, but with digital modeling and effects for more options. They both feature a "power level" knob so you can turn them down really quiet for home practice, but the 40 is definitely giggable.

It really sounds like you might be better off going with one of these super-versatile amps with the really varied genres and limited budget you've mentioned. Plus, with amps like these, you can find the tones you really like so when you start gigging more and need a more powerful amp, you have a general idea of what kind of amp to look for.

Re: Cheap tube amps selection

Well guys, thanks for the suggestions.
After few days of consideration, both Super Champ and Bassbreaker with reverb pedal would blown my budget, watched some videos about HT5, the cleans doesnt really appeal to me

Vox might do me good. Nice clean, Marshally' overdrive tone and decent high gain, and certainly cheaper than other 3....

So I ordered myself a VOX AV30. Thank you guys!
