I just got one of these last week. Stock pickups weren't bad but I just put in a PGn/CC set and it's rockin'.

epiphone black les paul standard-$379.pickups and electronics upgrade... you shouldn't get over $650 in the complete package... unless you have to have the gibson name
I second that...

But find a good one. There are a lot of bad Epis out there, as well as a few really good ones. Does it play nice? Sound good (acoustically)? Feel "right"?

Re: Cheapest decent Les Paul??

no, no, no!!!!!! Go for the real deal. There is a 2000 R7 on Ebay right now for $1900. If you are going to switch to a Les Paul, get the right one.:D

The thing is I don't think there's much chance of him "switching" to a Les Paul. If I read his post correctly he just wants one to fool around with every once in a while, to change it up a bit, and because they look great.

Re: Cheapest decent Les Paul??

He has no idea of the power of the Dark Side.......MUAH, HA, HA, HA, HA:saeek:

Re: Cheapest decent Les Paul??

I think the historics may not be good for him as they have bigger necks. The 60s necks are definitely what he should look around for if he wants a similar to tele size neck.

Re: Cheapest decent Les Paul??

My 52 Tele RI and my R9 have almost identical sized necks. Depends what tele he has been playing.

Re: Cheapest decent Les Paul??

Thank you to all who've responded! I've been wearing out google checking out your suggestions! I was afraid that if I posted again the ideas might stop coming in, but I noticed that people have started to refer to me in the third-person ... I'm paying close attention!

ModestCargo is right: I'm not "switching"; I'll never give up my tele. As for jdm61's suggestion that "the power of the dark side" shouldn't be underestimated it never, ever, occurred to me that I could be seduced by the Dark Side of the force; but ... if I could be a better guitar player ... hmmm. (Is "rock star" still possible jdm61?)

I'm deeply torn between "cheaper and beautiful" and "the real thing".

Your thoughts (from either side of the force) would be appreciated.

For the price of that Studio (which I say you'd be better off with a Korean) a local shop here has a Black/Gold Heritage that blew me away. It's a little bit smaller and lighter, and IMO that's a huge improvement. The neck is very 50's. Man what a great guitar. If you haven't checked out Heritage, you should before you plunge into a Korean LP with an 1/8" plastic finish, or a slap together "play 10 before you find a good one" Les Paul Studio.

If you live in a town with Pawn Shops, hit those up for 70s and 80s knock offs. There were so many that came out. Some have real mojo methinks. Cream binding that's faded; some battle scars; sometimes nice inlay work and mother of pearl logos.

I'm diggin' my Agile, but somethin' tells me you're a man of distinction. I'd say a real used Gibson Studio, a lawsuit 70s Ibanez, or one of the mojo pawn shop specials that calls out to you.
