Check these bad-boy amp speaker cables out!

Re: Check these bad-boy amp speaker cables out!

Okay, I can digest that, thanks. NOW, OTOH, what about these wonderful expensive Boutique amp speaker cables made with high end components and technology? Just cause gauge doesn't make a difference, doesn't mean the cable construction can't .

I notice a quick procllvity on music gear boards to dismiss anything that costs money (over and above traditional cheaper stuff ) to be ridiculed. Is it fear of the unkown, ignorance, common sense, or just wanting to justify not spending money on quality stuff?

Well, then you know you should be using this.

But are they made with oxygen free copper?

Where is the CVT coupler?

Re: Check these bad-boy amp speaker cables out!

There is a point where increasing cable size has no further positive impact, and it actually becomes stupid due to the difficulty of making good connections on speaker jack plugs and sockets with such large and heavy cable.

If you really must use a high-quality brand of cable, use one that is only a little thicker than standard, not something thick enough to tie a ship to a jetty.

Using the kind of cable you illustrate will not help with vintage sound, because such cable was never used on old guitar equipment back then to begin with.

And changing to any high-quality cable assumes that every other element of the system is up to the same standard, otherwise it's kinda pointless. Even one poor solder joint in the amp can negate any improvement from expensive speaker cable.

Aaaand ... it's worth remembering the comprehensive and well-documented audiophile blind-listening tests that were done where a bunch of golden ears were exposed to some ridiculously expensive speaker cables v's coathanger wire, and none could hear the difference.

Aaaaand ... if you really are serious about all this, then you might like to follow the thoughts of the legendary Ken Fischer of Trainwreck fame, who believed that cable sounded better in one direction than it did the other way around.

But I realise that my worthless comments verge on being sensible and should therefore probably be rejected.

Re: Check these bad-boy amp speaker cables out!

I have made several speaker cables from 14ga lampwire. They sound fine. I think the most important thing is to not use a longer cable than you need.

Re: Check these bad-boy amp speaker cables out!

I use standard, 16awg wire inside of cabinets. For a 4X12 for example ... two +/- pairs from the jack to the speakers. That would be about equivalent to a single 13awg run except the jumper between speakers is still 16awg, but it's a short wire. Something like this ... http://www.scumbackspeakers.com/faqs/scumback_4x12-series-par-wiring_4.pdf

I don't do it to get the equivalence of the heavier wire, 16awg is more than adequate inside the cabinet. I do it because that's how I've always done it. With a 1 x 12 or 2 x 12 for example, just a single run of 16 awg. My speaker cables from amp to cab are 12 AWG. I like using Speakons at the cabinet, so Speakons at one end of the cable ... Speakons don't like to clamp on small conductors.

I just stick with what has always seemed to work. Not begrudging anyone if they want to buy boutique or go overkill.

Check out Divine Noise cables. The do them for combos.

Most badazz cabinet cables I've seen lately were from Bob at Eurotubes. Gonna get me a pair of them for my Mark V:25 stack.

Re: Check these bad-boy amp speaker cables out!

I think they make a difference...not a massive difference..but then what does lol?

I make my own "bootique" 10 gauge cables (costs me $18 ..or maybe $14? lol..I forget which ..per metre ..plus the cost of connectors.)...they sound great!

EDIT: Correction: After checking...$6.36 per metre...so I'm not exactly breaking the bank.

lol ...overkill :D

Most often I use these 12 AWG ones (OFC, $2.86 per metre)

It's when you buy them ready made/packaged that you need to sell a kidney. Otherwise it's a decent (& pretty audible) upgrade for not much $$$

Re: Check these bad-boy amp speaker cables out!

I use a 14 gauge and an 18 gauge conductor for each leg. (It's old MIT MSC that I still have sitting around.) Connectors are Radio Shack big barrel 1/4" that I solder on. I drill out the back of the connector with a step bit as needed. A little clear heat shrink to keep everything together.

Re: Check these bad-boy amp speaker cables out!

Why do you use two different conductor gauges?

That wire is intended for use with modules that make use of the different conductors. I long since used up all my modules on my home theater system, and I don't want to buy more. So I just use the remaining wire on random projects.
