Maybe a synthetic.

It's not Asbestos by a long shot.

Re: Check this out- is this Asbestos?

I'm about to report this guy.

For what? If it is, asbestos is some of the best stuff ever invented. Just don't ingest it, you know, like most household items like cleaners and other such common sense things.

Fifty year old asbestos based flooring (the original Linoleum), still looks like new after fifty years. I had it in my old house and miss it.

Read up on it, and take all the "OMG it causes cancer" with a grain of salt....so far, I am pretty sure that everything gives you cancer.

Re: Check this out- is this Asbestos?

it doesnt make sense why anyone would use asbestos in a speaker cab. It was generally used in building construction due to the fact that it is fire proof. Not really necessary in a speaker cab unless you are such an amazing player that your speakers sometimes burst in to flame.

Re: Check this out- is this Asbestos?

what the heck is rock wool? does it come from sheep?

sheep that were raised on the rolling stones instead of mozart?

Think of cotton candy (candy floss, for you furriners).

Now, ramp up the temperatures by a few thousand degrees... mineral wool or "rock wool". It's pretty much the same process as fiberglass.

Pre-mid 70's, asbestos was common in building materials and manufacturing of all kinds.

Asbestos can still be found in industrial applications (where it is gradually being replaced). Purchasing it new must be pretty difficult ANYWHERE nowadays.

Reporting an eBay vendor for something that you imagine he might be selling is daft. Contact the vendor. Ask what those sticking out, furry looking areas are made of and why they are there? If you are unhappy with the reply, THEN report.

Ironically, if that material were asbestos, the safest thing that you could do with it is leave it in situ.

mineral fibres or man-made mineral fibres are fibres made from natural or synthetic minerals or metal oxides. The latter term is generally used to refer solely to synthetic materials including fibreglass, ceramic fibres and rock or stone wool. Industrial applications of mineral wool include thermal insulation, filtration, soundproofing, and germination of seedlings.

Rock on!:banghead:

It may be found in things like studio baffles, speaker boxes, studio walls and more.

Re: Check this out- is this Asbestos?

Yngwie's cabs are lined with asbestos to keep them from burning up.

Re: Check this out- is this Asbestos?

Are we really having this thread? Chances are soooo slim it is, I'm going with the rock wool theory.....and if by some miracle it WAS asbestos it came with the cab judging from the age.

Don't be an asshat Jerry.

NAH..I sure wouldnt report the guy w/o knowing for 100% certain. The fact that the cab. is vintage does tend to substantiate that its asbestos, especially if the amp was inside the cabinet like some were. Again. Ive seen Asbestos and thos does look like it, and yeah, there really is a need to be concerned if it is, cause despite what people say here, ive heard that a few fibers of that S**t breathed inot the lungs can and will cause cancer..idk.

Re: Check this out- is this Asbestos?

From the wikipedia entry

Asbestos exposure becomes a health concern when high concentrations of asbestos fibers are inhaled over a long time period.[29] People who become ill from inhaling asbestos are often those who are exposed on a day-to-day basis in a job where they worked directly with the material. As a person's exposure to fibers increases, because of being exposed to higher concentrations of fibers and/or by being exposed for a longer time, then that person's risk of disease also increases. Disease is very unlikely to result from a single, high-level exposure, or from a short period of exposure to lower levels

And someone else in this thread already said it. If it is asbestos (which i really doubt that it is considering how much it looks like something else) the best thing that could be done would be to just leave it alone.

Seems like an overreaction to get this excited about something that MIGHT be asbestos that you have no proof that it is.
