Choosing a guitar

Hello, i am searching for my first guitar, i have a budget for around 320$, but the problem, is that i dont really have a chance to buy used gear, cant find anything here in norway, so i need to make the best out of what i can buy, so, i play most metal, and some hard rock, i like the 'V's, and like the classing dinky forms, but i dont really know what would be good for me, and any cheap amps anyone can recommend? I have heard that the fender mustang is good for lots of disortion.

Re: Choosing a guitar

I would suggest maybe looking for one of those starter pack deals where you get both a guitar and amp in one package. For 320$ you can get either a decent guitar or amp but I doubt you're going to get both unless you work out a very good deal.

Oh and what ever you buy see if you can get a warranty of some kind.

Re: Choosing a guitar

I agree with Rockstar216, although I have to assume there is some sort of used market for you locally. There are some nice little gem guitars that are dismissed as junk out there that will be a serviceable guitar for a long time for you. if you're looking for that Superstrat style like Jacksons, you might look into Deans. They look good, they play all right and they're pretty affordable.

The Mustang series of amps is pretty good. There's a lot of possibilities in the amp tones in there. If you're looking for metal distortion tones, I would suggest a Peavey Vypyr as they have spent a lot of time trying to get the distortion sounds of their high-gain amps right in their modeling amps. I'm not sure how available they are where you live though.

Another idea would be to buy a cheapo amp locally and buy an amp modeling pedal from Joyo/Harley Benton(?). This guy is from one of those chilly countries up north and does pretty in-depth pedal reviews of them.

I don't know if you could find Cort KX5 and Roland Microcube there. Visit every guitar stores you can find there or search through local online sellers.

Re: Choosing a guitar

Musicians Friend sells used gear but imagine the shipping would ruin that idea ?

+1, i got my boss me-25 for about 200 euros, now used maybe found at about 150 USD. And i get really good tones out of this little box. The quality is just great. I was considering upgrading, and going the Boss/Roland way, since i really like their COSM technology, but now i sweet eye an line6 amplifi!!

Re: Choosing a guitar

If you are a bassist and have a bass amp, definitely look into the Harley Benton pedals, or go for a multi-effect like a POD or something. A Bass amp is similar to a guitar amp, only a wider spectrum of sound is available. You can plug one of these pedals or effects units that does the amp simulation thing into it and get plenty of amplification for what you need.
I'm pretty sure the Mustang amp can run line-out too, so you could buy a Mustang 1 or 2/Peavey Vypyr30/Vox VT20/Roland Cube/Line 6 Spider/etc and use it to run the preamp of it into your clean bass amp if you need band practice volumes.

LTDs are a good guitar if you like the Les Paul-style guitars too.

Re: Choosing a guitar

My first guitar was a semi-hollow . . . which was awesome because it's much louder than your typical electric unplugged. This let me learn to play for quite a while while saving up for a better quality first guitar amp. May not be suitable in your case if you're looking for 'teh brootalz' all the time from your guitar, but it's an idea.
