Choosing Humbuckers

Re: Choosing Humbuckers

Glad you're in heaven with your sound.

I just read through this thread and my first response was going to be definitely the Jazz neck. I was very dubious about the JB thinking that a 59/custom hybrid or a Screamin Demon would be a good choice. I've got a couple guitars with a JB in the bridge and one sounds great. The last one I put the JB in sounds just like what everyone complains about...the nasally sounding upper mids that I just can't get rid of. Initially it didn't sound so bad, but it really grows on me in a very bad way. I'm going to try some screw changes (short 1022 alloy) and magnet swaps, but if I can't "fix" it, it's gotta come out and go into another guitar.

The JB doesn't quite work in most guitars like yours (mahogany body with maple cap), but it seems to be perfect in some. It sounds like your guitar is one of those that works well with the JB.

Congrats on finding great tone. It's what we're all striving for.

Re: Choosing Humbuckers

Thank you for this comment, i had read this also about mahogany maple and it was a worry, i’ve got to be honest though. I think where i’m very inexperienced when it comes to pick ups and my ears are no where near as fine tuned as others so i will definitely struggle picking out things. In the back of my mind was the idea of having a start point with pick ups and honestly i am over the moon , its a new instrument and i wish i had done this years ago.
Over time i think my ears will evolve and if i keep learning i might pick out more aswell. I kind of wish I had more guitars now to try different pick ups. Seriously i’m thinking of doing some guitar builds , because the 59/hybrid were great sounding as well te pearly gates and whole lotta humbuckers. Wish my wallet would support this.

Hawkmoon, your ears will definitely "evolve" over time and you'll hear things differently tone-wise and all that. But often times no matter how many other people can suggest things to you based on their experiences or how many videos you watch, you just don't know how it's going to sound or if it works for you until you drop the pickup into your guitar and give it a try! For years I had avoided trying an Invader bridge pickup because I knew a couple guys who used them and being honest, I hated their tones. Eventually I wound up trying the Invader in a new guitar I'd picked up, and absolutely fell in love with it. That particular pickup in that particular guitar was just the magic combo for me, even though I'd previously thought the Invader wouldn't work given it's specs and what I'd known about it. And yeah we all wish we had more time, and money, and guitars to put all of these different pickup sets in! It really can become an addiction trying these different combinations and searching for those perfect and inspiring tones.....but it's a fun addiction at least ;) Definitely let us know if you wind up trying out some of those other pickups as well down the line, would be interested to hear how they compare to you after playing the Hot Rodded set for a while.

Re: Choosing Humbuckers

Hi thanks for the comment and sorry for the late reply I've just seen this. I’m back at college now and getting ready to do some recording so i will be taking the guitar in. Definitely will try other pick ups in the future, but in a different guitar. I have my first guitar which really could do with this and also i have a bass here that i think will get the same treatment. I’m thinking also to record others playing the guitar aswell. I intend to add bits and share anything i can really. Thanks again for the help, so glad I registered now.
