Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

Let it B
Looking into something for the old CE1/2 esque type tones. Slow shimmer up to near Vibrato.

Need a true bypass or buffer and not interested in Digital modelled versions, please :)

Opine?

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

I don't have one but if I were you I'd check out the MIX Micro Chorus "reissue". I do have the same "reissue" Micro Flange and dig it so based on that I'd start there!

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

I have played that one actually, Christian. IT DOES sound good, but does not have enough adjustment for me with the fixed depth control.

And I forgot to mention in my OP, Stereo capability is not a requirement.

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

If you can handle a pedal that has a NO BATTERY option the Malekko is nice, it's old school sounding and even uses NOS BBD's like all the old classic chorus pedals but it is power supply ONLY which will bother some folks k(I am one of them!).

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

If I can move some of my pedals that have been retired due to my new amp... 2 bills tops... 125 to 150 is where I would prefer to keep it, and I do not mind used but totally functioning.

Edit- would prefer a battery option, but not a deal breaker. Will check that one out.

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

My only other suggestion really is the AnalogMan Chorus but starting at $225 for the 2 knob mini version and going up to over $300 all tricked out you have to really want it to be willing to part with that kind of coin...

In the 125 to 150 the Malekko is gonna be hard to be, they are 140 new but that battery thing might be an issue for you.

If you have to have the battery option maybe a used AnalogMan Chorus...they can be had in the $150 top 200 range if you just watch ebay and thats a great chorus.

Last option is a used CE-2...they can still be had in the $150 to 200 range as well if thats what you really want...

I sold my old md 80s MIJ ce2 to somone here about 10 or 12 years ago. Was it you? I sure miss that thing...I put alot of miles on it..despite the noise and "tone suck" in bypass.

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

yes, will start combing Fleabay (been lbrowsing here for abit).

Have you any experience with that newer blue box analog from MXR? The one with the tone controls?

I have one but I got mine on ebay years ago...it's a cool pedals, sort of limited in the speed race but still a cool unit.

I do not...I am sort of in a no chorus phase...used them a lot for a while then flanges were my thing for a minute then I went phaser nuts then I sort of stopped with modulation all together for a long time...I have DC-2 on my board now that rarely gets used and a CE-2 in reserve but these days if I want a little worble I opt for a Rotosphere or a Uni Vibe...

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

I was in that phase for about 15 years. Only recently been using the stompers here and there.

I have not even seen that blue MXR in the local guitargets. Just the BOSS stu and the EXH ff when it comes to chorus.

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

Look for a Visual Sound Liquid Chorus. If it was to get a chorus, it would be that one. They used the BBD chips and IIRC, RG (the man who designed it) said it is based off the CE-1 or 2. A killer chorus, IMO.

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

if you are ok with second hand gear, the ce2 is still really hard to beat. The ce-3 can sound just as good (but you have to mod it). If you are not afraid to mod, you can make em both go as fast and/or as slow as you want. The other one that's nice and has the bonus of true bypass (although i still prefer the boss ones) is the voodoo labs analog chorus - but that one is getting scarce to find.

The Boss Dimension chorus is my favourite. IMO, if you cannot get the right effect by combining the four preset buttons, you probably do not really need chorus anyway. These days, I fake the effect using a CE-20. Does a nice CE-1 too.

Red Witch do some interesting pedals.

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

I'm using an EHX Small Clone. Cheap, analog, true bypass, awesome sounding!

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

I owned the Micro Chorus for a brief time, and when I saw that the GC near my house had a used Small Clone, I picked it up. I like to leave it at the 7 o clock position with the Depth switch up. Really watery, pure, chorus.

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

Bought a small clone about 7 or 8 years ago when Iwas running the Rivera. Nice box, and I liked it for its own thing, but it sounds different than the Roland/Boss types..more intense...which I liked fine for cleans, but not for distorted stuff.

Hafta check out that VS, and Voodoo labs versions.

I did give a listen to that Malekko clip on the big screen. Nice.

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

If the CE-2 is your reference point, get a s/h one and put the Monte Allum kit in it. I've had my original one since 1978 or whenever they came out, and it was starting to sound pretty sad. The Monte Allum kit brought it back to life, but better than it ever was ... the speed range is widened, and the sound is still the sound it's known for, but better.

I see the Allum upgrade kit now includes a flashing LED that will flash at the rate set by the Rate control. Nice. Here's a link, scroll down for the CE-2 kit ...

and here's a vid that compares a stock CE-2 with a Monte Allum upgraded one ...

Re: Chorus...analog...who has got the best bang for the buck?

I have a Mooer. Works fine for my purposes and I don't care if it gets lost or damaged.
