Chorus Pedals?

So I just ran into some money and since I'll be selling my Randall combo (built-in chorus) to my drummer once I get my Ear Candy Buzzbomb, I figured I should pick up a chorus pedal as I've found I like the effect.

I know almost nothing about what's available, but I'm looking for a really lush chorus sound. One tone that comes to mind immediately is Chris Amott's clean tone in Arch Enemy's "Snow Bound", off Wages of Sin. That chorus-y clean is probably just what I'm talking about. If you haven't heard the track, I suggest you take a listen as it's really quite a beautiful one. Any ideas as to what he used, or what pedal I can grab?

BTW the max I'm willing to spend is $200, but I'd like to hear suggestions if necessary for pedals above that range.

Re: Chorus Pedals?

i have a boss super chorus. its my second one. i like it better than alot of the others i have tried.

Re: Chorus Pedals?

I have a Boss CE-5, and an Analogman Clone Chorus. I prefer the Analogman, its a lot more lush than the CE-5.

Re: Chorus Pedals?

i actually use an old FX67 stereo turbo chorus- ive bought fancier boxes, but always come back to this...much deeper and swirlier than any Boss Ive tried.

Re: Chorus Pedals?

Anyone tried that old Zoom Choir pedal? The first generation ones with the goofy knobs? A friend of mine just got one but I haven't tried it yet. Zoom product is usually mediocre at best, but I seem to remember that the Choir getting good reviews.

Re: Chorus Pedals?

cobain association aside, the small clone is really a great pedal. Thats what is on my list of pedals to buy.

I don'tknow who that is, but if it's for a chorus pedal recommendation, I would recommend Boss chorus pedals, hands down. If you want a very thick one, I think the Chorus Ensemble is what you want, versus the Super Chorus.

I have the FX65. I mostly use it for acoustic. But I like it better than the Boss.

I liked the CoolCat, but it seemed to be too much of a one-trick pony.

Re: Chorus Pedals?

The Electro-Harmonix Small Clone is a standard. I prefer more paramater adjusting ability, but this one sounds really good. All of Boss's modulation pedals sound great to me.

Re: Chorus Pedals?

An old Boss CE-1 would be cool, if you can find one on eBay/craigslist/somehow.

Those get pretty expensive if they are in good condition. There is an interesting and rare pedal called the DC-2. It just has 4 preset buttons; it looks like any Boss stompbox, but it has buttons instead of knobs. The problem is that the unit could be damaged if more than one button is pressed at once. But I went and got the DC-3, which is a really similar chorus/space effect, but it has proper knobs instead of buttons. Both the DC-2 and DC-3 sell for about $150 and up each on Ebay.

Re: Chorus Pedals?

Every - I repeat EVERY - guitarist needs a chorus pedal. even if you don't use it. While I'm not a connesuer of chorus (Washburn Accellerator Chorus!), I have to say a Boss CE-5 should handle almost everything you'd ever want to do.

Re: Chorus Pedals?

I'm seeing lots for the Boss pedals and the EHX Small Clone. Anyone who's tried both that can offer some insight? I notice the Small Clone only has a depth switch, and a rate knob while the CE-5 has 4 different knobs for adjustment.

Anyone know how either of them works with clean and overdrive?

Also on the Musician's Friend reviews page, someone mentions that they think the Boss CE-5 has a weak signal... anyone else had this problem?

Re: Chorus Pedals?

I just got my Small Clone yesterday and played with it a little bit last night. Yeah, the depth only has two settings - and I can't imagine every using the deep setting - i prefer the not-so-deep. The Rate gives a lot of options - but I kind of like the middle.

I've played the Boss (a friend's) and no doubt it would give you more options - but if the Small Clone is the sound you want (which it is for me) then it is perfect. This is, if I had the Boss, I would probably make it sound like the Small Clone, then leave it.

Re: Chorus Pedals?

the CE-5 is a really 'hi-fi' sounding unit...not too swirly, and it gives you the chorusing without any thinkening. i used one for awhile, but didn't like it so much...it wasn't 'deep' enough, or 'watery' enough. I went back to my FX67.
