Chorus Suggestions Please!

Next item on the pedal board list is Chorus. I was going to do without, but I've always had one so I want one again.
I'm not too big on Mod pedals like this. Had a phase pedal but passed it on... Flange doesn't really do it for me either.

In the past I've had a Rocktron Deep Blue, and a Boss CE-5.

I really liked the Boss back then so it's still an option. Rocktron not so much.
I'm also considering a Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus. I've got their tremolo and it's really nice. Plus I've never played a VL pedal that has let me down.

Any other good chorus pedals out there? I would rather keep it analog. I would like to keep it around $100, and I will more than likely be looking for something on the used market.

Thanks for the help! I can't wait to get a couple more pieces, and have full rig update/review .

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

See if you can track down a Boss DC-2 Dimension C. Like a chorus but not quite as cheesy...actually kinda beautiful. Maybe a little more than $100, but worth it in my opinion.

Cheers...........................wahwah

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

Rocktron Tsunami. Its really a hidden gem. Analog and all that.

It can go very 80s sounding, to just a beautiful warm sound.

And its wonders for running stereo and adding fatness to your amp :)

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

Maybe a small clone or the new electric mistress which is a chorus flanger.

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

These are the ones I have:

Boss CEB-3 for bass: Of the choruses I own, this is actually my favorite to use with my guitar. I like to have my chorus at a really subtle setting. With the 4 pretty much standard parmeters, I get to keep it really subtle. And when cranked up, the sound remains consistently natural.

Boss DC-3: It's a little noisy, but the chorus effect is immaculate. With most chorus effects, when a fast rate setting is used, we get that dizzying vabrato sound. The DC-3 doesn't really get that. I think it uses a different type of algorithm for chorus processing, but I don't really know about that stuff. I do know that it gives a strong chorus effect without the wave-pool sound. It has a lot of parameters to adjust, so I can range from really subtle sounds to a pretty dramatic but usable chorus sound. Running it in stereo seems to make it more subtle, but it is still pretty intense.

Ibanez CF7 Chorus/Flanger: This chorus looks, feels, and sounds like a toy, but I like it a lot. It doesn't sound natural, especially since it distorts a little at high settings. I like having lots of parameters to play with, so it's cool for me. It also has the added feature of switching to a rapid wave mode, which most people do not find to be usable at all, but it is fun for sci-fi or even ring modulator tones. When run in stereo, the sounds seems to "grow up" a little and sound like a serious chorus.

Electro-Harmonix Small Clone: The tones are full, dramatic and natural-sounding at every setting. It's a popular choice for guitar and bass, and it mixes well with other effects. The only thing I don't like about it is that I prefer to have my chorus effect sound really subtle, and there isn't a way to turn down the intensity of the effect on the Small Clone.

80s chorus, is it getting cold in hear because shivers are running up my spine?!

i'm not gonna say that i'm the expert on pedals...but the sounds you can get out of this (it also has delay) are pretty cool and i can't ever see me taking this out of my set up!

Oh yeah how is yours doing? I remember you asked me about mine a while ago :)

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

i really like it...i developed what i think of as my signature tone with it...i hope i can recreate that with my traynor and even improve it!!!??

i love the delay on my clean sounds...just a tad to give it some shimmer when i'm getting mellow.

then the chorus is set just right to thicken up my distortion rhythm tone...LOVE IT!!! there may be better pedals out there for what i'm using it for, but if there are...ignorance is bliss right now!!!! lol!!!

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

An old Boss CE series pedal sounds pretty awesome for analog chorus or I belive that Retro-Sonic has a clone they build that is supposed to sound amazingly thick. Sadly over $100 but my experience with chorus is that you've either got to have one that sounds amazing or use nothing at all.

Any of the modern Boss, DOD etc stuff just leaves me flat as it sounds so flat and dead to my ears. Its like playing in multi-fx land of horrible tone lol.

If I had to go with something cheaper though that Voodoo Lab pedal is pretty nice for the money.

You also might want to consider a vibe type unit. It was able to handle all my choral needs and then some though it definatly depends on the type of chorus sounds your after

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

I got a Boss Ce-3, its got 2 outputs so you can send the signal to two amps. They sound pretty good. Its fairly cheap going for around $40-60 on ebay.

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

Thanks for the recommendations so far.

Stereo output isn't too big of a necessity. Especially since my delay has that function already. I thought about the Rocktron Tsunami, or maybe a VS H20, but having another delay option seemed somewhat redundant to me.

I'm not so much into a big chorus sound. A bit of chorus used to be part of my "signature sound" I guess you could say. Just a little to wet the signal some, but nothing too big.

If I were going to go higher on my price range what would you recommend?

Any vibe units you'd recommend me checking out? Never really used any before.

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

look at the digitech chorus factory...honestly, I was able to lone the CE series boss pedals, as well as a few others. it is the only other Digitech pedal I would recommend (the other being the bad monkey), but it sound wonderful and is really really quiet.

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

I currently have a BOSS CE5 Chorus Ensemble on my main gigging pedalboard and it's a very versatile pedal.

The HBE THC is another chorus pedal I like the sound of. It's a more intense effect than I use on my CE5, but I can see it suiting alot of musical styles just as well :)

+1 very worth it!!

Thos are very unique! I recall trying one once and I was impressed at the sounds.

I always favored older-style ones like a Boss CE-2. If I could I'd plunk down for a Boss CE20 (the chorus counterpart to your DD20) but I use a Line 6 MM4 instead. Not quite as good for sound but superior flexibility.

Ibanez BC9. About $100. Sounds just like a CE-2...maybe more intense, but without the headroom problems or need for a weird adaptor. I actually prefer it over the Analogman clone.

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

I only have two chorus pedals, a Small Clone that I really like and a CF7 that I mostly dislike. (I don't know what it is, I just can't get it to sound how I want it to) Every so often I get the urge to buy a DC-2 and/or CE-2 on ebay, but for what they go for I just can't seem to pull the trigger for how little I use chorus.

Re: Chorus Suggestions Please!

Ibanez Bi-Chorus. SWEET. Can go subtle or sicko. The BC9, not the "Bi Mode" chorus, the sparkly pink one.
