Chose mY Plexi-In-A -Box

Yes, 'Plexi 'is a gray area term. Its meant in the strict sense to be a virtual Bassman, with Kt66's and a closed back 4x12 cabinet ..so there is some tailoring of the pedal going on to try and achieve that tone.
Yes, an inexact science, just pouring through internet soundclips, although I do have a very good sound system hooked up to my computer with a nice subwoofer .
Even though you assume the pedal architecture is a JTM-45 Plexi, youd probaby be right if you guesses the amps used to model the sound are late 60's Plexi Panel Superleads and not mid 60's JTM's at least from the few clips I saw.

So, for the Plexi in a box, the pedals in the running were the HAo Rustdriver- ZVex Box of Rock, Wampler Plexi, and the Rockett Animal.

I liked the Box of Rock, but I couldnt find any clips that sounded as amp like/responsive as the Wampler or Rocket, even though it sounded really very Plexi'ish under hard drive.
The HAO Rustdriver actually had some great sounding clips, but I read where it really likes to be plugged straight into the amp and not in the chain of efects that quashed some interest for me.
It came down to the Wampler and the Rockett Animal. Both were very amp like in response, and the Wampler had some real authentic Plexis sound, but I like the touch dynamics / amp like response of the Rockett more, and even though I think the Wampler overall may have had had more authenticity, the Rockett was able to get that warbling Plexi Angus SG lead sound better than all the others.
The Wampler sounded responsive , dynamic. and very real to a Plexi, but again, when you nail the Angus Young lead sound on a demo, where thats what I really wanted to hear as far as a Vintage Plexi..thats what sold me on the Animal!

Just get the box of rock. It's an extremely responsive pedal. If you don't like it, return it and start again.

Too late..I bought the Rockett Animal. I don't think I should sweat this. I might've done a bit better either way on one of these stompboxes, but in the final analysis, My spider sense is telling me no Box is gonna be a real Plexi anyway, so its mainly a matter of speculation, unless you have all three there at one time to compare.

MI Audio Crunch box gets my vote. I've used this in front of Marshall, Fender, TopHat, Orange, and others and its killer.

Re: Chose mY Plexi-In-A -Box

Didn't we already do this in the last "Plexi In A Box" thread you posted?

Or is it Deja Vu?

Re: Chose mY Plexi-In-A -Box

The crunchbox is pretty cool but it gets more fame for it's 800 sounds, and not so much the plexi stuff. I use it for both because I'm not rich

Re: Chose mY Plexi-In-A -Box

Box of Rock;

Wampler JTM-45 in a Box. ( The Rockett is more designed about the '68 Plexi) But man, the Wampler sounds very convinciing, especailly with the Strat and Hendrix at the start, and it absolutely nails Rush... but again, its a JTM-45, and the Rockett is more what I wanted, and a "68 Plexi" pedal. I think I am gonna want the Wampler also to round out my Marshall in a box pedals;

What do YOU think??

I almost went for the BOR but then I heard that the crunchbox also has way more gain than I need. it sounded fun at the time, and y'know what? it's awesome. Every now and then I tune to D standard and take a stab at 80's hard rock and the crunchbox saved me from having to buy another pedal for that.
And for that, I gave up on what probably is a lot more of a plexi-like sound than the BOR or the others like the Wampler

Re: Chose mY Plexi-In-A -Box

jerry is right. none of them sound like a plexi ....unless you are running them thru a plexi.
They are all cool pedals, but the basic ingredient for a great marshall sound is...well, a marshall.
I might sound like a snob, but it doesnt matter what pedals i use thru my fenders, then plug into my marshall its pretty obvious the difference.
I reckon the trick is just to get a pedal you like the sound of an use that.

Re: Chose mY Plexi-In-A -Box

We can talk about it for days on end but buying, trying and using is the only thing thet will get you real answers...

ZVex really hit something special with the BoR and IMHO nothing else mentioned in this thread so far touches the feel and reactivity of the BoR...

Re: Chose mY Plexi-In-A -Box

I had a Crunchbox...it was ok but there was a hint of "bigmuff fuzz" to it that I didn't care for. Based on clips and research I'd go with the Wampler!

Re: Chose mY Plexi-In-A -Box

I've had my BOR now for awhile...At times it really just sounds imitation to my ears, but it definately sounds best through a british type amp...It's just ok through my Pro Reverb Fender...Lately I've been really digging the RAT pedal that I built and modded..Funny how our ears are ever changing....I've also been on a 100% Les Paul kick and haven't played anything else hardly...And I'm a strat guy normally..Just change really.

I like the CB and I built one of my own...It's ok,but I Like the BOR better...CB has way more gain and is a harsh pedal if not setup right.

It took you less than 20 minutes to post and then buy? Wow ;)

As for the BOR vs the Wampler, I think I liked the Wampler better according to those vids.

This.

That Animal sounds good, but more like an MV JMP/800..more middy and crunchy like the CB is. Different sounds..both good, but different.

And yes amp AND SPEAKER is key- you are better off with something tweed-ish (twin/bassman) than something blackface if you cannot run it through a Marshall type amp. I ran my Plexitone through my Rivera Chubster with the "notch" on the clean channel out (tweedy vs notched which is blackface) and the ninja boost engaged to push the mids and treble, but the gain rolled back to keep it clean. With the notch pulled for blackface it sounded like...a Blackface fender with a Marshall pedal tacked on...very fake.

I wish I still had that Chubster..not only for the sounds it produced on it's own but the ninjaed tweed clean channel REALLY took gain pedals well, and I'm sure the Distortron would sound even better than Niels' pedal did.

Re: Chose mY Plexi-In-A -Box

Is the Zvex Distortron the same as the BoR minus the boost? Not having a boost doesn't seem that limiting, given the price difference...
