Christmas Gear Options/Opinions?

Hey all,

Christmas is coming up and I have no idea what I want! One of the options I've been considering has been one of the $200-$500 digital all-in-one recorders (ie- Fostex Mr-8, Tascam DP-01 or DP-01FX, or the Line 6 Toneport) I am totally without experience in this realm and would love some input. What is truly "all in one" out of these? Have any experience with any of them? What can I get the most use out of as I get better at it? $500 is pretty much the ceiling on this one fellas. Discuss!

Re: Christmas Gear Options/Opinions?

I have the Tascam dp-01.

I like how quick and easy it is to put a song together.

I dislike how noisy the preamps are, the lack of phantom power, and the 'cheapness' of the quality (some buttons are a bit sticky) - i know that if i drop it, she wouldnt have a good chance of surviving.

If you have a decent PC, and arent scared of technology, get a PC interface. Better quality for the money IMO.

A soundcard, like the Toneport
+1

You get alot with the toneport, especially for the money (guitar/bass amp models, as well as vocal and a 4 track recording program). I do recommend that you download the line6 monkey on your pc before purchasing. There is a conflict with certain intel chipset and therefore you will need to get an extra usb card. Just a little heads up so you don't have the same frustration that I went through. :)
