christmas present - delay??

well, heres another Christmas present question for you all..

im thinking of getting a delay pedal. i was very interested in the Boss DD-20, but my parents were not liking the $180 pricetag. So, im looking for something else, thats if i dont get to convince them. Is there any custom delay, from some unknown company, that kicks this one out of the ballpark, and is way cheaper? (around $100 dollars would be good)

thanks

Re: christmas present - delay??

Get a pair of Rocktron Short Timers. They sound great and they're inexpensive.

OT - how do you like that Epi Goldtop? I dig the pickup combo you have in it. I have an SM-1 neck in my Nashville Tele.

Re: christmas present - delay??

that rocktron looks promising, and for that price, i could ask them to throw in a ds-1 in there too. im a little worried aobut the delay time being so sshort... anyone know about how long it can go for?

off topic reply:
the goldtop is amazing, ive had my good and bad times with it. There are some times when i just cant stand how it sounds, and other i adore it and would not trade it away for anything in the world. (more of the 2nd one than first) the sm-1 and sm-2 have a very classic rock sound. tagged with the traynor, it gets hendrix, clapton, and all those classic rock tones pretty well. I can get slash tone, and hard rock solo stuff with the sm-1, but the sm-2 just isnt cut for it. Im still dreaming of that humbucker lp so i can do all those hard rock stuff.

"Short" mode goes to 400 msec. "Shorter" mode goes to 200 msec.

It's still longer than any delay I've ever needed.

Re: christmas present - delay??

yeah, i just realized how much 400ms really is. alright, so i think thatll do it, 1 rocktron short timer, and one boss ds-1 (which ill have to mod). its gonna be a happy christmas!!!

o wait, damn, i forgot, im not here for christmas, that means i wont get to play any of that stuff until january 4th. but whatever, ill be in france, playing my dads old acoustic he didnt want to bring over to america (can see why, what happened to my moms guitar is ugly!! 3 months in a cargoship doesnt do good to guitars)

Re: christmas present - delay??

I use the DD6, but it's not THAT much cheaper than the DD20. But I bought it on sale ($140 out the door).

Re: christmas present - delay??

I think the Boss DD-3 is a cool choice. But I prefer digital delays.

Re: christmas present - delay??

the main reason i would ever buy boss pedals is because they are very widely modded, and have a good selection of mods that can make them better. ive seen the DD-3 high-cut mod on analogman and the keeley modded one, but both of those require you to buy them new from them, or send it in, and id rather do them myself. does anyone know what the changes are, so that i can do them myself? if someone does, ill probably be getting the dd-3.

thanks.

Re: christmas present - delay??

The DD20 is, for me, the ultimate delay pedal. I've been using mine for about 18 months now... bought it and never looked back. It's a little more difficult to use, but the steeper learning curve is worth it. It's an invaluable soundscape tool to me. It's worth the extra money.

Agreed. Offer your parents to doing some extra work at home in return of the more expensive DD-20, it's worth it. ;)

Finally! Someone agrees with me! Usually when I tout the DD20 as being the best delay pedal out there (which I believe it is) a bunch of Line 6 DL4 users start throwing rocks at me. :laugh2:

Hehe...... You know, the rock throwers feel a need to defend a bad purchase. :6:

Re: christmas present - delay??

I think the DD-20 trumps the Line 6. I just spent a few hours with my DD-20, and I had trouble turning it off. It is really the ultimate delay.

Re: christmas present - delay??

yeah well, i wish i could get it, but my parents just wont go that high. so its between getting the rocktron short timer + ds-1, or a boss dd-3 by itself. im thinking rocktron short timer (+ ds-1, or any other effect that i might want thats around 40 bucks.)

Why not just ask for a different effect entirely and save up your $$ for the DD20? It's worth the extra $$, wether your parents like it or not. :13:

Re: christmas present - delay??

I think that if you're ok with more subtle (not really subtle, but relative to others) delay effects, which many people desire, the Short Timer is a great choice. And a DS-1 would sound awesome through your amp. The DS-1 is popular with beginners because is is inexpensive, but it doesn't sound that great with solid state amps. That's the reason I got one to begin with, and why I didn't like it for a long time. But once I got a rockin tube amp, it became one of my favorite pedals.

Re: christmas present - delay??

im thinking to get the ds-1 because i can use Erik H's guide on his webpage to turn it from an OK, cheap pedal, to a kick-ass cheap pedal. has anyone other than erik done that mod? how does it sound?
