Cigar Box Guitars?

I did a google search for cigar box guitars. Plenty of folks make them. Anyone ever played one? They look like a bit of an abomination to me. But, I'm trying to keep an open mind.

Not quite, but…

Re: Cigar Box Guitars?

I have been building one, it has an SD Little 59, Tele bridge and Tele neck. It's almost done, had it up and running and it sounded great. It just needs some work on the neck mounting and bridge, not really staying in tune well. The box is a Perdomo box that I personally emptied. :)

Cool... hard to do?

Re: Cigar Box Guitars?

I have a buddy who built one. With an open tuning and a slide, they can be kinda fun.

Re: Cigar Box Guitars?

My friend just built one set up for slide, with the neck through, a humbucker, and a flat strainer for a resonater which does double duty as the bridge. Funky, but sounds great through my Pro Junior.

I played in a folk/blues trio for a recording session last year where the harmonica player brought in a cigar box/diddly bow, which I used for lead slide guitar during the session. Gritty, down-home, grass-roots blues for sure. Hard to match with the amp as the levels aren't like a normal guitar - can't set them up very well and all, you just take what get.

Re: Cigar Box Guitars?

If I was much more DIY minded and had the knowledge to build one I probably would.

Unfortunately I am not so I won't:disappoin

Re: Cigar Box Guitars?

i see lots of em and i hate most of em. not really due to the guitar itself but they are almost always open tuned and played with a slide. terribly out of tune and loudly. the audience eats it up too. makes me wish i had a tommy gun

Re: Cigar Box Guitars?

I can't justify spending the money to build a guitar that intentionally sounds bad. Not when I can buy a Squier for $50 and put decent pickups in it and come up with a solid player.

Re: Cigar Box Guitars?

I played a couple at a Arts and Crafts fair a couple of years ago and keep thinking of building one. I think they can sound great.

Re: Cigar Box Guitars?

You can't, but I surely can :) Even cheapest Squire costs 150$ (which is about 1/3 of minimal monthly wage).
Besides costs building an instrument is pure fun - even if it is diddely bow, or slide 3 or 4 string.
I've build one 4-string for slide, 2 ukuleles (one of which was super short sopranissimo for my 3 year old daughter), and got to build 8 little diddely bows for kids in kindergarten for christmas.
I like those I've built - but I know they are simple and even primitive instruments - they have to be disposable (imagine active 3 or 4 year old with instrument - lots to learn and lots to check - ie. 'can I pull on this, or press on that?' attitude - if anything breaks it should be easily replacebale/repairable)
And above all - even a 3 year old can assist You and learn a lot through the process of building.
So take it as fun, teaching/learning process that will end up with playable instrument for about 10$ (plus pickups if, you're making non-piezo electric)

this type of thing is what i was talking about. its not the box thats the issue usually, its the player. ive build plenty of little three string planks with an altoid can for a resonator. they work fine and are fun but not a stage worthy instrument

Re: Cigar Box Guitars?

These are some of the ones a guy I know built. They play just like any well set up electric, except the 4 string is setup for slide
