Clapton and his boost

Re: Clapton and his boost

Jazzmaster :D

(I actually think a Gibson is more ergonomic than a Strat; weight aside.)
a les paul is not ergonomic as far as im concerned. they sound great and look cool but a strat is way more comfortable, hell even a tele is more comfortable, to play than a lp. a sg on the other hand isnt bad with the body being so thin

i won't play with just the amp-guitar but with pedals
so the boost , good or not ?

i use it with pedals sometimes and i like it fine, dont know if it will work for what you want or not. have you tried one?

Re: Clapton and his boost

Every time Jeremy posts about his Stack Plus loaded Strat with boost I want to build one....

Re: Clapton and his boost

I like the mid boost, although I am not a fan of all of the tones EC got with his. I seem to like his mid-80s sound the best. The mids got overbearing later on. But his mid boost is a cool idea.

Interestingly I like his Gibson/Marshall tones the best followed by the early/mid-70's Strat tones. Although the latest tones with the Tweed amps and latest pickups are pretty good too.

stevie has one too, its a fun guitar for sure

TBX or standard tone control?

Re: Clapton and his boost

i run mine with a standard tone control. ive never loved the tbx even modded but plenty of people do like it.

his tweed tone is pretty mid heavy as would be expected, the places he plays you are hearing what the sound guy wants you to. stage volume at msg is fairly inconsequential. i like it but i think he has had better tones over the years.

I played mostly Les Pauls and Jazzmasters for a long while; the bridge on a Strat is so low to the body and so close to the strap button, then there's that middle pickup and the volume knob and vibrato arm crunched into your picking hand :p I'm used to it now, but until I became accustomed my playing took a noticeable hit on a Strat.

Re: Clapton and his boost

I've had a Clapton Strat for the last ten years (in pewter) and I love it. I tend to use the mid boost for light coloration and slight additional muscle rather than full on. I do like the earlier versions with the Lace Sensors better than with the current vintage noiseless, but that's a minor quibble.

Re: Clapton and his boost

TBX. The pickups are a little darker than standard singles to my ears, so although I don't usually use the TBX past its centre detent, it's there if I need to brighten things slightly.

Re: Clapton and his boost

fender told me the boost was not in a lot of their guitars
so no need to buy a guitar with a boost

Re: Clapton and his boost

for me, the neck position with the boost would be great for the fat blues

the new elite strat has the s1 :it's different but it brings another kind of sound, not vintage blues
a darker sound and fatter ?
i tried it but i need to play with the Clapton model too

about the bridge pickup +the boost for the EC model
can we shred? or would it be better with a new strat deluxe hss ? for high gain

Re: Clapton and his boost

Ergonomics. A Strat fits the human body better than any guitar I can think of, and the Fender 50s/60s neck scale / string spacing is better suited to doing leads than a Gibson.

Maybe, though to be honest I have never played my les Paul and thought "I wish this guitar wasn't so uncomfortable!"

I think it may be a weight thing. Clapton was never really into body building was he? Lol!

Then again page is so thin it's like the 1959 might cause him to snap in half...

Re: Clapton and his boost

I have a Clapton setup with gold laces. I find that the boost will increase the volume (like I can make the amp break up at lower volume) when it's clean and increase the sustain with overdrive.

Re: Clapton and his boost

I had an '89 Fender Custom Shop Strat with Original Lace Sensors, Clapton Boost and TBX and it sounded great - single coil to Humbucker tones with the roll of a knob.

Re: Clapton and his boost

Just out of curiosity, how big is the pcb? If you use mini pots could you fit it under the pickguard? Or would you have to drill out room for it?

On a Clapton Strat you can see that they rout out under the pickguard and next to the trem spring cavity for the PCB and 9V.

However if you trim a corner off the PCB, it should fit.
