Clapton strat pickup change

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

What exactly was not to spec? I'm curious because there's only so much manufacturing variation in different models of these particular pieces, unless what you were sold was counterfeit.

For the record, all the CTS pots and CRL switches I use come from AllParts or in Fender retail package.
Without the spec, I do not know.
What I do know though is they were inferior, the lugs were thinner and the body material was thinner.
The switch also was not as sturdy.
These also came originally from allparts (uk)
I have looked at allparts and
They stock parts as used by fender but also cheaper parts from the same manufacturers
I wouldn't say they are counterfeit as they were not sold or packaged as fender parts

I guess I have to admit that I'm confused as far as what you were expecting versus what you got. All the CTS pots I've gotten over the past couple decades have been the same, and most of them from AllParts.

Well I guess it's my own fault, I bought it as a wiring kit from ebay and made the assumption (unfortunately) that because it said CTS pots and CRL switch that these would be fender.
It was only when I questioned the seller that I became aware of allparts!
Although I have worked in electronics and avionics for many years this will be the first guitar I have wired so never sourced these parts before.
I guess if you have been regularly wiring these things then you know exactly what to order and where from.
Ah well, I have the pups now and the 5 way switch (oh and a spdt switch for the gilmour mod) so I have started the wiring and hope to have it finished over the weekend.

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

Well the pickups are now as the gilmour sig strat, the toggle switch has been added,
The guitar is back together and has been set up with new strings (Gilmour sig strings of course for those great bends!)
Slight truss rod adjustment, action set and pickup hieght set.
All I can say is WOW ! AMAZING !
No noticeable hum from the single coils. (It is shielded to within an inch of its life!)
The tones from these pups are fantastic (imho) and it's great to have the extra combinations of pickups.
Not had much time yet to really get into it, hopefully over the weekend when I will set the pedals up and have more time.
But so far VERY VERY impressed!

Wow, very nice! I am happy that it was a successful project. Can we hear it now?

I will see if I can set something up on Saturday to record , but just found a slight bug! I may have to go back inside and check the middle pup tone control as it dosent seem to work and is a bit scratchy when you turn it, maybe a dry joint or bad connection (I hope)

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

Sometimes the pot is just dirty, but check the wiring anyway.

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

Oh awesome! What was wrong?
Not really sure, I removed the pot, checked it worked refitted it and all was good!
I guess a dry joint or something,
I have wired the middle tone switch to do the bridge as well !
Really happy with it.
Spent most of the day trying to learn the comfotably numb 2nd solo haha

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

Loving the tone of my recently moded strat!
The fat50, CS69 and SSL-5 have
made a huge difference .
And of course the mini toggle mod.
I have also added bridge pickup tone control.

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

I don't know if this has been mentioned but if you take out the scratch plate and electronics, put them somewhere safe. You'll need to have them if you ever sell the guitar.
