Since 335's are being discused, what pups do you think were in this guitar and what SD pups would be the closest?

Re: Clapton's 335

It's a 64 (I think) and that means the pickups are just plain old pat number pickups.

If you want to get close get a set of unpotted 59's with covers and get 2 bridge models...that'll get you close for sure...

Thanx tgwif. I was thinking 59. What tonal diference is there between potted/unpotted?

Re: Clapton's 335

Sorry to hijack, but for how long did he use a Les Paul?

He used a Les Paul with the Bluesbreakers & the first (Fresh Cream) Cream album. After that it was a variety of Gibsons. The 335 being the most note worthy.

Back on topic. I would also consider the Alnico II pro's. Even though the PUPS in the 335 were not PAF the era is right. The Alnico II's are a real warm sounding pup.

Re: Clapton's 335

LP...Bluesbreakers and most of Fresh Cream was recorded with borrowed guitars, most of it was a 50's Les Paul Custom, 3 pickup with a bigsby buit after than the SG, the red 335 and a Firebird I were his main axes.

Since Eric's 335 was a middle 60's it would have had alnico 5 pickups for sure...alnico II Pros will get you close but a pair of 59B's would be closer to what Eric really had

Yeah you are right, but the fact is it won't matter. Nobodys had that tone since. Its not just the pickups! Its the player:smokin:

No, not for sure, but rather probably.

If his 335 was a 64 then there's a better chance than not that it would have had A5's but A2's were still occasionally used by Gibson between 62 and 65.
