Leo was trying to get tonal extremes. Roll the tone (.1uf!) back all the way on the neck, roll it back a touch on the middle and of course the bridge wide open... Remember they were only 3-ways back then. That's three pretty distinct tones (although not super musical for the way most of use use them) Original esquire wiring, Jazzmaster, Jaguar, they were all designed to get a wide range of tones.
