CLEAN PTP Wiring

I've seen pics of a lot of handwired amps, and a lot of neat jobs. However, this struck me as unusually clean and neat, considering it's almost 30 years old. Can any of you tell what kind of amp it is, just by the wiring? I couldn't, but some of you may be able to.

I just thought this was amazingly neat.

Re: CLEAN PTP Wiring

Hiwatt or one of the offshoots of that company like Reeves or something. Seeing Harry Joyce's wiring is a thing of beauty.

EDIT: or possibly early Sound City.

Re: CLEAN PTP Wiring

Definitely a Hiwatt "inspired" job.

The only thing stopping me from saying it IS a Hiwatt is the "sloppy" blue/black wiring on the left hand side.

Hiwatt is very taut & all 90 degree angles :D

Okay. I'll be the pedant who points out that if it uses turret boards, it's not PTP. :( There are more wiring options than just PTP and PCB.

I must say, Hiwatt's milspec wiring is mighty tidy.

Re: CLEAN PTP Wiring

All HiWatts that are not on a PCB look like that...also FWIW, Mark I, II, and III Sound Citys look just like that...Mark IV's on the other hand were wired true PTP an ddon't look as good on the inside...

Touche. I've not seen many examples of amps without turret board...so I've always considered non PCB board "PTP". I guess that's not entirely acurate however.

Re: CLEAN PTP Wiring

Here's some PTP (I think)

Too bad amplifier chassis pics went down, don't know what happened, but it's a lot more difficult to find Matchless chassis pics.

Re: CLEAN PTP Wiring

I'm not a huge fan of bundling lots of wires together for the sake of neatness. Sometimes you don't have much of a choice though. I'm also not geeked out on the right angles thing. I did build one amp with lots of right angles but I could hear no difference from a similar model that had bends in the wires, not right angles.

I've also felt wires should cross each other at steep angles as often as possible.

Re: CLEAN PTP Wiring

I love Hiwatt's, but!!!!!....... that overkill neat wiring has some issues, namely ground loops since the ground wires "orbit the chassis" for the sake of neatness!

Still killer to look at!.... a little hum aint always bad!

Re: CLEAN PTP Wiring

I wonder if that was the problem when I tried to A/B a Hiwatt DR-504 & a Marshall 2204 using a Morley A/B ?
