Cleaning an Open Humbucker

I picked this second hand pickup up the other day.
Its fairly worn. I just noticed the side bit (pictured) - it looks like the pickup tape has come off and there's bits of sand and dust gunck stuck to the tape.. Im thinking of using a can of air just to see what blows off.. any other recommendations!?

Looks like someone tried to clean something on the guitar that it came out of, with steel wool. I could be wrong. In which case I would try a bit of rubbing alcohol on a swab.

Yeah, I use a toothbrush for this (and cleaning pedals, too).
