Cleaning frets with a maple board?

Re: Cleaning frets with a maple board?

^^ ..what he said :D

quick, highly effective, painless..

Even better on Rosewood/Ebony boards. Conditions the board & polishes the frets in one go...

Re: Cleaning frets with a maple board?

Cool! THanks!! Cant beat 2 in one!!! In normally lemon oil my rosewood/ebony boards..

Found silica packs on amazon too. just gotta figure how big I need. dont wanna over kill the thing.. Funny.. need to buy a moisturizer for my accoustic and demoisturizer for the electrics..

Re: Cleaning frets with a maple board?

The maple wood is pretty solid and hard so cleaning the fret with that would be pointless.

Re: Cleaning frets with a maple board?

Just bought some Gorgomyte. I've been playing and messing around with guitars for 30 years. How come I have never heard of this stuff? I do hate the mess steel wool makes, so if this stuff will replace it I will be happy.

Re: Cleaning frets with a maple board?

Didnt have time or money to get the special cloths.. Had to go to Jax yest to get my pain pump filled after a court appearance for my kid.. (day full o fun!) Anyhow, while in jax, popped into GC to see if they had these cloths.. they didnt.. so, got some strings (see footnote**) and grabbed some light fluid from publix near home..

Last night I WD40'd all the bolts and all.. The rollers on the trem were getting corroded and getting frozen.. Got all that addressed. Got all the mung off the frets. Im still gonna get some steel wool for the frets in the future.. the frets have tiny grooves in them. Not string wear grooves, but tiny grooves that run like side to side.. So, I want to get those buffed out.. Never seen anything like that before.

Cleaned up real nice cept there is still some spots of discoloration on the frets and those grooves.. Of course I paranoid worrying the lighter fluid is going to hurt the wood finish tween the frets... But got is all done, replaced the input jack as it was crackling when Id move around, restrung with a set of D'add balanced tension strings and put a good buffing with paste wax on it. Looks and plays amazing!!

** Foot note.. bought at collectors tin at GC. Had a set of Daddario 10s, as set of bal tension ones and a set of the new ny/xls and supposed to come with picks.. Of course my crappy luck... I get home and there are no picks... %@$#%@^$@#!!!!!!!

Re: Cleaning frets with a maple board?

Tape the fretboard wood off with low tack painter's tape and polish them with 0000 steel wool.
This is exactly what I've always done. I use one of those metal 'fret guards', too. Keeps them shiny. I do this during every string change so I don't have do ever do a very deep cleaning.

Never like to read this on a pickup forum. Steel wool is the number one cause of pickup failure. Tiny metal shavings near a magnetically charged coil? Even when you tape off any way into the pickup cavity the hair like strands stick to the bench, carpet, cloths, tape etc... What I have observed over the years is that this practice is a bit like drinking and driving, so many people do it and because they often have no immediate consequence they ignore the reality or underestimate the risk they are taking. As effective and quick as steel wool is at cleaning frets, from a tech's perspective it is an unneccesary risk. Cheers, RG

Every string change? Seriously? That seems really tedious-- how often do you change your strings?

Re: Cleaning frets with a maple board?

It's 2016, guys...give the steel wool to your mom so she can polish her brass lamps and pick up one of these cloths.

Again, if you have a Maple board, especially one that is satin finished, worn or unfinished, you'll want to mask off or protect the fretboard as the polishing does create a black residue on the cloth that can be difficult to remove if it comes in contact with the wood. As I mentioned before, I have used it on Maple boards with gloss finishes in good condition with great results, but they took a little extra wiping/cleaning afterward to make sure the residue was completely gone.

I know Gorgomyte advertises that you can polish the fretboard at the same time as the frets and I have used both the Gorgomyte and Miracle Cloths to do just that, but I have noticed 2 things:

1) If the piece of cloth is fairly damp, it may deposit too much "conditioner" and leave more porous cuts of Rosewood, etc with gray or white dots showing in the pores.

2) Doing only a very light and fast rub on the fretboard to help loosen up the grime and then finishing up with a proper fretboard oil treatment, such as Gerlitz' Guitar Honey, yields even better results on the wood. Although it's difficult to see on darker woods, there IS a thin layer of polishing residue left behind on the wood and the final oil treatment really finishes the whole thing up nicely, leaving the fretboard darker, cleaner and better refreshed than just the Gorgomyte/Miracle Cloth alone.

Re: Cleaning frets with a maple board?

i took lighter fluid to the board on this guitar. the stuff on the frets was gooey like tar.. ??? scrubbed most of it off. The frets need a dress. they are not work, but from side to side, they have some indentations in them.. never seen that before.. not wear, but like mars in the metal.. I also did a quick wipe of the board with it too and then quickly with a dry cloth.. Hopefully this wont damage the wood of finish on the wood.. On my Rosewood and ebony boards, Ive always used lemon oil. Rub a generous amount on and go back and buff it off.

I had always heard what Rodney Gene was saying about steel wool frags and have always been scared to use it.

Re: Cleaning frets with a maple board?

I don't know how I missed that.

Yeah, I was about to mention Gorgomyte too but I do remember someone mentioning it's the same thing as another non-guitar product.

Does anyone know how to get that reasonably here in Europe? (Greece to be exact)
