Cleaning your guitar

Hey, how often do you all clean your guitars, such as wipe the dust out from between the pickups, and wipe off the fingerprints, and what do you use to clean them, and is there any type of liquid that could make it so dust dont form between the pickups?

Re: Cleaning your guitar

i clean my guitar after every pratice session. damp cloth..wipe off sweat and fingerprints off the body...this polish(forgot) for removing SCRATCHES on my pickguard..and i always clean my strings and neck too(with a damp cloth).

and another important thing to remember: i find my guitar less dirty when i first wash my hands with soap before playing.

Re: Cleaning your guitar

I totally concur with benji, wash your hands before you play to help get rid of the acid that corrods strings quickly. Also always wipe your strings down before you stow your gear to prolong life and harmonics. As far as cleaning your guitar, be aware of the different characteristics of each finish. For example a laminated or painted guitar can shine up with windex or other mild cleaners. Guitars that have natural cellulose finishes would quickly gum up if you kept applying windex. The safe bet is to use a damp (not wet) cloth, or if you have some heavy prints, any furniture polish that contains Lemon Oil will shine and it helps the wood maintain the natural moisture. Another key point, dust transfers static electricity and if enough accumulates, it will rob you tone even in hardly noticeable increments. But hey, nobody messes with your tone! Also, this daily attention will allow you to bond with your instrument and will lead to a long and healthy life. Wait, that is for a dog! Disregard......

Re: Cleaning your guitar

Lighter fluid (naptha) is safe to use on your instrument. It takes gunk and grime off pretty easily. Follow up with a good (non-silicone) polish to buff the finish up.

Re: Cleaning your guitar

for the neck and finger board, i use spit. someone reccomended it, and it really worked to really make it silky smooth and soft and fast. Spit into a cloth, rub it down, almsot polish it with spit. than repeat with a cloth that is damp (with water) to remove spit (thats gross) and smell, chew gum before, makes ur guitar
smell minty fresh. for the body, just a water dampened cloth....

Never thought to apply it to my aze, but after 8 years in the Army, you can bet I literally spit shined boots. Something about the enzymes in your spit, really brings on a shine!! :usa2:

maybe it's the salivary amylase-I still remember that enzyme from high school.

Re: Cleaning your guitar

Are you guys all for real?

Lighter fluid? - Is this actually good?
Damp Cloths? - Wont it rust the strings?
Spit? - thats just nasty!
Window cleaner?

Is this all true?
I thought a dry cloth would be best?
Maybe im just a guitar kook who knows nothing

Re: Cleaning your guitar

I dunno i when i first got my guitar i was super clean about it i would wipe it down with a dry cloth after ervytime played it made sure there were no prints or oil on it. NOW after 3 years offf bashing it to death, i dont even bother to wipe it down, whihc may explain why my strings corode alot faster these days im thining of only wiping down the strings so they last longer. As for polish, ill owrry about that when i get my gibson, my MIM strat does not require polsih and probably only gets polished when i send it in the shop for maintenance.
