Cleartone Strings

One of the things that was in all the goody bags at User Group Day was a couple sets of Cleartone Buddy Holly Tribute strings. I guess they're regular Cleartones, with a charity attached to this particular run - Buddy Holly Foundation for bringing instruments to challenged children.

Anyhow, I installed my first set on my ES-335, and all I can say is I love them. They sound broken in right off the bat, but still sweet and bright.
They're perfectly balanced and toneful. I think they're micro coated, so we'll see how they last. They make the claim to be long lasting, and I always wash my hands before playing, so hopefully they stay fresh sounding for awhile.

Anyone use this brand? They're more expensive than my regular D'Addarios, but I may start using them on my ES-335 because it's a beautiful sounding guitar....I may as well have good strings on it. Try them out sometime.

Re: Cleartone Strings

Oh Iv'e tried those strings and they are VERY good!! I now have several sets Ive got from MF since I put that first set on. They should last lionger and they do sound clear crisp and full. Tp me they sound better than my regular D'Addies.
I'm getting ready to string my V with a set tomorrow.

Re: Cleartone Strings

Hate them! Got them on an axe I bought from UberMetalDood and I wasn't impressed.

The coating somehow screws with pick attack, they're stiff, and just tonally don't work for me. I'm not a fan of "coated" technology.

The only coated strings I would even consider remotely trying again are the D'Addario ones because the coating was uber-micro thin; you had to actually look and listen for the coating to really notice it. And, the tone was very similar to regular XL's, but a little different - not radically different.

I'm definitely not thinking about trying Cleartones again. To each his own.

Well, I heard them on a old Strat, that doesnt get its strings changed but once in a blue moon. Also, through a clear clean Fender amp.
The Strat is already bright and full,. maybe you were playing a different style or with distortion. I myslef would really only use them for a resonant guitar with low gain pickups and through a clean fender style amp on a guitar that doesnt get much use or regular string changes.

Re: Cleartone Strings

I'll bump this thread next month and give a final evaluation. Keep in mind, I just put these on yesterday, and like them so far. Probably a bit premature for a string review.

Re: Cleartone Strings

i use them for acoustic just because i dont care anough about my acoustic to change the strings as often and i like the brighter tone of new strings.

havent tried their electric sets

Re: Cleartone Strings

I use them on ALL of my electric guitars. Cleartone EMP 9's or 10's (Idk which guage I prefer yet). They last forever and stay clear and awesome sounding. I used to play elixirs then I discovered the Cleartone's. Never looked back. Idk where this "screws with the pick attack" nonsense came from, but they've been nothing but clear and responsive for me.

Re: Cleartone Strings

I'd like to try a set, but IME, coated strings lack the dynamics and overtones of non coated strings. Did not find this to be an issue on the DAD EXPs, but all the others I have tried have been really "muted". They do last longer though!

FWIW_ I've been super impressed with Rotosounds lately. Wish I had tried them years ago.

Will wait for your update Joe.

Re: Cleartone Strings

The coated D'Addarios for Acoustic Guitar sound magnificent. A lot better that the normal 80/20 set.

HTH,

Re: Cleartone Strings

I'm one of those guys who enjoys changing strings every once in awhile. It gives me a chance to connect with my guitar. Show it some love.

The problem with the darn Cleartones is that they stay new-sounding (like second day new) forever. My poor guitars never get any love.

Re: Cleartone Strings

There was a guy on here who didn't like 10s anymore so he was giving them away.

I got a pack of cleartones and lost them. Don't know where they went... : /

Re: Cleartone Strings

Might have to give them a shot. I need to buy some new strings anyway. The last few packs of Dean Markleys I've bought have been crappy right out of the box and my Boomers never seem to last as long as they use to.

That's exactly why I like them. I hate the tone of old strings, and even if I changed strings enough, they need to be stretched out each time which could take days
