Clips of the Triamp are up :)

Its finally taken long enough, but here is what I ended up getting recorded. All of the clips except for the clean clip were improv and are a result of me just messing up  .

The chain is as follows: Grosh -> Hughes & Kettner Triamp -> Shure SM57 mic -> Tascam US-122 USB mixer -> Cool Edit Pro 2.0 (on my little Toshiba laptop).

I'm still experimenting with mic positioning and this so far doesn't really do the amp justice, but it gives some idea of what the tone sounds like.

So please excuse the crappy playing (I did it when I got home from work and was beat as hell) and enjoy :laugh2:

definately the cleans are good sounding........however the OD/crunch didnt do anything for me at all

Re: Clips of the Triamp are up :)

Is there a special way to mic distorted sounds? When I'm jamming out, it sounds rich and has a lot of depth, but recorded through a mic, it sounds cheap. I'm I the only person who has had this problem?

Re: Clips of the Triamp are up :)

Sounds nice and warm, as for mic placement well close to the cone brings out clarity, at the edge of the speaker it gives a more hard sound, between cone and edge it has a more midrangy quality, perhaps a bit dark as well.
The 57 does not like alot of lowend...it thumps alot then, try to place it fairly close to the speaker, a few cm's from the grillecloth is good.
It is not the most open of mic's, it tends emphasis the middle.

Re: Clips of the Triamp are up :)

Aha... that could be why. I noticed strong emphasis on the bass notes and mids, but no real emphasis on the top end. I think that's why the clips don't sound to their full potential. It has a great top end, but when all you hear is the lower end, it sounds tight, but that top end presence that's normall there just doesn't come through.

I had it relatively close before, but I'll move it closer and not directly in the middle of the cab. Since I have two different speakers in my 2x12, I'll have to see which projects the top end better and focus the mic there. Hopefully it will make it sound better.

Thanks for the comments and criticism guys... keep 'em coming :)

Re: Clips of the Triamp are up :)

Well from the clips I bet it sounds very warm live

The higher gain stuff was a bit mushy but that could have been the mic as rid said

Re: Clips of the Triamp are up :)

For the highgain sound, I'd say that EQ sounds about right, but the overall sound could tighten up a bit. I'd just try these things. Get a clean boost pedal like a Fulltone Fatboost, Banzai CF or New Rising Sun. Possibly a hotter pickup with a tighter low end like a C-5, Screamin Demon, or CC. Also, you could try experimenting more with preamp tubes, like pulling out the JJ's and using GT12AX7C's in addition to the M you have in there.

As far as micing, just record your pass a bunch of times, making note of the placement. You'll know when you hear it.

I think the clips you posted do a good job of showing us the nuances in the tone.
Tightening it up a little, and possible a different pickup may get you where you want to go.

I have that problem too, and I'm using as tube preamp with my mic! :yell:

Re: Clips of the Triamp are up :)

You call that high gain?!? Drop and give me 200, Maggot!

/Major Pane mod: off.

Nice man, sounds very very toneful, just get the mic setup properly, and I'm sure it'll rip.

Re: Clips of the Triamp are up :)

I get great tones out of my SM57 running thru my GT-6 on bypass for volume control only, then right into my soundcard. I usually place the mike halfway between the center of the cone and the edge, around an inch from the grillcloth.

I like the sound of the amp Chris. It really sounds like it has a ton of range and punch. The Grosh is a strat body...right? IMO those type guitars, even with a good bucker will never sound as thick and punchy as a bigger guitar, like a LP. So the thickness is all relative. Play around with the mike placement some more, and I'll bet you get some tones to tape that sound much more like you hear live. Bottom line, it's sometimes hard for pro recording engineers to capture the true sound of an amp, let alone guys like us using recording equipment that probably cost less than one of our midrange guitars.

Keep it up...sounds good so far.

Re: Clips of the Triamp are up :)

Nah, the amp sounds good. I probably sounded critical, but I just typed the first thing that came to mind. Still, it's not bad to have a boost pedal to beef stuff up. The micing thing is just a matter of trying everything. What pickup do you have? I remember you saying it was a good boutique pickup. I'm curious to know what it is.

Re: Clips of the Triamp are up :)

I didn't realize people were still responding to this thread, thanks :)

The new clips sound a lot better to my ears, I take it you guys approve of the new stuff?

The pickups were the Wagner I was raving about (www.crcoils.com). They are SR single coils and his newer design, the Dark Burst. The 1a clip was done with the middle single coil alone (only sc I've ever heard that sounds great by itself). The neck single coil is used on the 2a bluesy clip (it's blended with the Wagner Dark Burst humbucker to give it a bit more thickness). The neck/middle combo is used on the quack city clip (it nails that SRV type tone and I think the clip shows it can do it in spades). The distorted clips (3a and 3b) all are with the Dark Burst humbucker. It's thick and articulate and while I do have a maple neck on my Grosh, I think the other woods (mahogany/maple capped body and rosewood fretboard) give it the formula for great Les Paul like humbucking tones.

HUGE props to Jeff H on mic placement. I figured it out by myself, but when I saw his post later, I agree with him, I think he's dead-on. Setting up the mic about an inch away and positioning it between the cone and the edge gets a great balanced tone (unlike before).

Re: Clips of the Triamp are up :)

Pretty cool. I like the distortion and the clean tones both.
I agree with Rid on the mic placement. I usually point the mic at a slight angle away from the center of the cone - almost pointing at the edge of the cone. It definitely gets midrangy there.
