Closest Duncan to a Dirty Fingers?

You can buy connectors that you attach to your new pickup so it snaps right in. You do have to solder and heatshrink the connector, though.

I just hear a fizzy/furry/hairy undertone on a Dirty Fingers that no Duncan has. I also feel it is closer in style to an X2N (although not output). Maybe a C8???

So to that, a Custom is not a bad starting place.

I know what you mean by the fizzy/furry/hairy undertone of the Dirty Fingers. My thoughts exactly on how it sounds. Not too crazy with using it for cleans by itself but middle position is great. The output is pretty close to the X2N, though, but has way more high end and less mids. Low end is kinda close. Both pickups came out around the same time, too. Love those 70s hot humbuckers!

Here are the specs for the DF:
  • The pickup's overwound yet balanced coils feature adjustable pole pieces, which allows you to fine tune the output of each individual string. The Dirty Fingers also features shielded, four-conductor wiring for series, parallel or split coil operation and is fully wax potted to eliminate any chance of microphonic feedback.
  • Output: 14k
  • Position: Both
  • Magnet: Ceramic
  • Wiring: 4-Conductor
  • Details Gibson's Dirty Fingers pickups are also grabbing attention of hi-def shredders everywhere! Unique sounds, uniquely Gibson
Reading this, I'll stick with my recommendation of the Custom.

Real Dirty Fingers are 16K. Also that’s not the “output” it’s the DC resistance. I had a set of the original ones from an ES-347.

Is that info from Gibson’s site? It’s either wrong (not uncommon) or they aren’t making them the same way (also not uncommon).

So which Duncan’s are 16K and have ceramic magnets? That would be the Distortion.

Those specs are straight from the Gibson website.

If the DF is 16k, the Metal Fatigue should still be a contender. Since it's from the Custom Shop, just have them use a ceramic magnet; plus you'll still get the double screw coils to adjust like a DF.

This was copied directly from Gibson's website (using the exact language that they used, with the same bullet points), so they may have changed the specs since you tested them.

there's more to a pickup's tone than resistance and magnets. but also, if you're willing to go custom shop, you could just ask them to clone a DF. OP already said if he wanted to drop $160 he would just order a new DF.

Much of what they have as pickup specs is wrong.

If you Google Dirty Fingers you’ll find references to them being 16K. They were the hottest pickups Gibson made. The Super Humbuckers (tar backs) were sometimes 14K.

They might be winding them that way now, but if you’re trying to match the tone of the original Dirty Fingers that won’t do it.

They are actually very close to pickups I make. Except I don’t use screw poles.
