Closest Page pickups?

I was wonderin if anyone had a recommendation for a close Page sounding humbucker combination (going thru a les paul classic) I'm looking mostly for that tone he got on the song remains the same dvd in particular on "rock and roll". In my opinion thats one of the greatest sounds of all time I came up with a combination of the C5 in bridge and a 59 in neck i'd like to get a vintage tone like page's but with increased output like it sounds on rock and roll. give me feedback on what you think about that and if you think other combinations would be better, which ones? thanks

Re: Closest Page pickups?

If you've got the money you can always get some Jimmy Page Custom Shop pickups.

and what magnets are those are they vintage type sounding?
I really don't know a thing about them. Robert has a set, maybe he'll chime in in a bit.

Re: Closest Page pickups?

if you want the closest as you said.....i would probably have to say the custom shop Page pickups, although ive never tried em, ive heard em and read many reviews, seems those are the real deal

if not those, a C5/59 or 59/59 combo would be pretty sweet

Re: Closest Page pickups?

Didn´t Robert just post a review on the Page Customs a week ago or so?

Just search for "Jimmy Page" (YES, this board has a search function :laugh2: ), if it´s still here, you should find it in the Pickup Lounge ;)

Re: Closest Page pickups?

id say a good paul, duncans (59/59 59/C5, or page customs) and THE RIGHT AMP would be key.......i forget what amp he used off the top of my head, but for a good page sound, you NEED the right amp. i would think a vox, marshall, or orange would be in the right direction, but someone who knows should answer that......

didnt page also use tele's in the studio alot? thats another avenue, as is the doubleneck sg

Re: Closest Page pickups?

There was a post in the about "the ultimate tele tone" started by Lew. There he comented which amp Page used during the recordings of the first LedZep album (A Supro Thunderbolt amp) But this amp may be won't the same as the one he used lately with the LP.

Re: Closest Page pickups?

The Custom Shop Jimmy Page set is the only way to go if you want to nail JPs LP tone, period. 8.7k alnico v bridge/8.2k alnico alnico v neck.

The next closest thing is a 59 set, but be warned that they are not the same tonally as the JP set. The JPs are warmer and have more of that hollow, almost nasal type of tone that JP gets in the mid position.

I've known for a long time now that Seymour winds a killer pickup and I thought the Antys were killer PAF repros but I didn't know how wicked his ears really are until I tried a JP set. The tone from the JPs is seriously unmistakable as the tone JP got from his LP.

All it would take for a serious JP fan is about five minutes with my 59 RI and they'd be saving up their lunch money for a JP set. They really are that convincing.

Re: Closest Page pickups?

Also, where can you find specs on them, and where can you buy them? They're not listed on the SD site, and GuitarElectronics and Black Rose don't list them anymore.

Re: Closest Page pickups?

The JPs are the same as any custom shop order, around $150 a piece or something like that.

Plexis (59s, I think)

Thanks, and I've got more questions for you. I love Page's album tone, but his live tone is usually very thin and lacking in sustain. So, I'm not sure which is his real tone. The album tone could sound better because of some kind of studio trickery, or his live tone may suck because of bad acoustics, bad recording or something. Do the JP pickups remind you more of his album tone or his live tone? How's the sustain? Also, I've heard that the bridge pickup sounds weaker than the neck. Is that true?

Re: Closest Page pickups?

Call the SD Custom Shop for the exact specs but like I stated before 8.7k(b) and 8.2k(n) with alnico v magnets is what I got so I assume thats the specs you'll get as well. You need to call the Custom Shop to order them as well if I am not mistaken but John or Lew may be able to order them for you but I just don't know for sure. I have always called the Custom Shop directly for CS pickups.

Since I don't record or play out on Mr. Pages rig I can't really qualify an answer to which they do better but getting something close to his live tone will be easier than his studio tones. His live tone stays somewhat consistent but in the studio he gets all sorts of different tones depending on the gear.

I will say that through your gear and especially with the JP wiring that you'll get plenty of the same tones he gets but with your own flavor attached. The closer you get your rig to what he uses, the closer you'll get.

Even if you don't dead nuts what he gets, you'll be more than close enough to be happy, and it is possible to get tones nothing like what he gets if you take it far enough. My Mesa rack gets both very close to what he gets as well as tones that are unmistakably mine depending on where I set the dials.

My 2203 Marshallo gets all over his tone, especially with a wa in the chain. Fire up a Plexi and you'll get even closer.

Re: Closest Page pickups?

amp wise i read in a guitar world that he used a 100 watt SLP marshall plexi amp. He used an ornage amp for maybe one or two songs but his main amp was the marshall. Id say follow roberts advice and get the JP set from the custom shop if your really trying to nail his tone. OR you could go with a 59/59 and get something close and perhaps maybe even your own unique sound, after all they are great pick ups.

Re: Closest Page pickups?

Thanks, guys.

I used to be a huge Page fan when I was a teenager, but I don't necessarily want to nail his tone. I'd rather sound like myself, but with a better tone. I just saw descriptions of the JP pickups here and on the LP Forum, and they sounded like just what I was looking for.

Since there aren't any soundclips available, I went back and listened to some Zep cd's to get a feel for what the pickups might sound like. I really loved his album tones, like on Led Zep II, but his live tone kind of sucked. His sucky live tone could have been caused by a lot of different reasons besides the pickups including his extra sloppy live playing. That's why I wanted to know whether the pickups were more like his live tone or his studio tone.

I don't want to spend $300 on pickups to end up sounding thin and sustainless like Page did live. However, if the pickups have plenty of sustain and sound full with plenty of bright and bite, kind of like Page's studio tones, I may have to shell out the cash for a set.

Didn't he use a Tele in the studio? Bit of a laugh if that was the sound you were aiming for.
