CNC Machine (Wood)

Stratman

Guitaris Maximus
I may be crazy, but I just spent $4988 for a CNC machine (ShopBot Model 24-18) that I plan on using to make guitar bodies and necks.

My problem is that I have no freaking idea how to even start using the CNC Machine, but can not wait for delivery.

You can check out the machine's details on the following link.

Re: CNC Machine (Wood)

Got to love a fantastic , wonderful new tool ! Congrats , A CNC is a ton of fun I used one quite alot building tables and cabinets. They make a huge mess and will rip your hands and arms off so be careful. I never finished making the program for my own custom guitar body.

Re: CNC Machine (Wood)

I don't really know anything about getting a new machine up and running but I do know quite a bit about programming and running them. You probably have a lot more to buy... endmills, radius bits, drills, tool holders, and materials to make fixtures for holding parts. Depending on the software capabilities and your goals for the machine, you may need more advanced programming software.

Re: CNC Machine (Wood)

I loved running/using the Fadal 4020 at my last job. You can do a lot of stuff with a CNC. Just go slow, test your new programs out cutting air using a slower feed rate wile being ready to stop it in the event of a crash. Then cut some thing that is of lesser value, like scrap wood or foam board, then go for it. At least till you become proficient with it.
Have fun!

Re: CNC Machine (Wood)

Yea we got a Fadal 4020 at work also
Don't know much about operating it but I am commonly tasked with repairing it

Wood is harder on tooling than metals
Travel slowly

Good luck

Re: CNC Machine (Wood)

While I have a Porter Cable router, I will (Need) to purchase a HP Spindle, Zero plate, more machine bits, vacuum and attachments.

This change in hobbies will cost me about 5,000 more and I don’t even know if I will be successful yet!

No pain, no learning...

Re: CNC Machine (Wood)

Wow this machine is heavy, has a lot of electrical connections, makes a lot of noise, generates a lot of wood chips.

PS: My first attempt to make a body did not come out so well, but I am very new at this and the second was better.. now working on rev 3!

Pics or it didn't happen, leisure suit.

CNC programming - Too much stuff to learn, but rewarding after learning how to use

So much to learn, so many, many mistakes to be made.

Finally after 6 tries, one body came out right.

I am glad that I have been using cheap timber (2X16) to learn how to program and use this machine.

Now to try some expensive wood.
