Coil split options on 1 master tone, 2 x Vol, 3-way blade configuration

Howdy, I have an ESP LTD EC-1000FM with 2 x volume, master tone, 3-way selector ('59b/JBn). I was wondering if I can switch to a '59 custom hybrid on the bridge and take advantage of its coil split capability. My question: is that possible? I'm not familiar at all with what would need to be done to have the coil split option (e.g. one of the tone buttons would need to be converted to push/pull?). Thank you very much for your input! Here's the guitar for visual reference http://www.espguitars.com/products/9526-ec-1000fm-asb

This is a really nice guitar which plays very well and has a good choice of stock pups. What do you not like about the JB that makes you want to change it? If you want to sweeten it up I would suggest a push pull to put the JB in parallel. This is something I like but tone is a very personal thing.

If soldering and tinkering is not one of your strong points you might want to consider a triple shot.

Welcome to the forum!

I love the 59/Custom Hybrid, and the ability to use it split- it sounds great! Also, it is a good combo for both vintage & modern tones. Yes, you have to use some sort of switch, either a mini toggle, or a push/pull pot to do it, and it requires soldering. If you decide to go ahead with it we can help you out. It really isn't that difficult.

Thank you for the reply! Like you said, tone is a very personal thing. I don't mind the JB, but when I play (no gigs, just home studio) I find that I toggle to the neck position ('59) almost 90% of the time. Now, after I've listened to the '59 hybrid, I think I would like the '59 neck / '59 hybrid combo. I might be wrong, but I want to try it. Thanks again!

Awesome! I think the push/pull pot is what I was aiming for. I'll educate myself a little more on this option (splitting) and what pots are available. I also appreciate any tips/help you can provide. Thank you for the reply.

It isn't difficult, really- it is just a switch connected to a pot...the 2 things are electrically independent. The switch just grounds out 1 coil (the 59 coil) leaving the Custom coil to work in single coil mode. Easy, and it sounds great!

Sounds good! I'll have to inspect the cavity of the guitar where the switch would go in. I can't even picture how a toggle switch would fit, but as I said, I'm only looking at the coil split push/pull, not to install a mini-toggle switch or anything.

Re: Coil split options on 1 master tone, 2 x Vol, 3-way blade configuration

One more question (hopefully). Would the push/pull replace one of the volume tones, the master tone, or which existing knob (or pot)? Thanks!

any pot you wish to replace..the switch is independent of the pot

I think you pick whatever pot you want. Think about it ergonomically- which pot is the easiest to get to? Usually it is the volume, but really, it is up to you. Also, the type of knobs you have- some are easier to 'grab' and pull. I like push/push pots better, but those are difficult to find (at least good ones).

nope! typo, sorry. '59 n / JB b.

Got it! Volume then. Makes sense, thank you.

Re: Coil split options on 1 master tone, 2 x Vol, 3-way blade configuration

Sorry fellas, diagram-specific question :naughty:
I'm looking at this 2 volume (push/pull coil split) | 1 tone | 3 way toggle diagram: http://bit.ly/2aoq4ig
First, is this the right diagram (pretty sure it is), and second, what is this gold-ish thing at the top right of the diagram? Also, I'm just messing with the bridge pick up (replacing the JB with the '59 custom hybrid) -- do I need to do anything to the '59 on the neck (e.g. re-solder the green wire from the '59 mag to the new push/pull pot?). I don't think so, just asking to be sure. Thank you very much for your feedback!

That's the toggle switch! I answered my own question! :)

Re: Coil split options on 1 master tone, 2 x Vol, 3-way blade configuration

If you are just replacing the bridge pickup, don't worry about the neck wiring (unless there is a reason to change it).
