Will a tapped bucker still be humbucking regardless of where the tap is placed?

yes, your just grounding off part of the windings for both coils, lowering the output.

Using a coil tap, might it be possible to coax a single coil type of sound while still retaining hum cancellation? If tapping a hot pickup might result in a more vintage sound, what would happen when a 59 gets tapped?

has anybody thought of having one non-tappable coil, and the other coil with a tap? say we did this to a custom-series, this way, you can have a standard custom pickup, and when you tap it you've got something akin to a custom/59 hybrid.

If the tap on one of the coils is enough to cause a dramatic difference in the number of active winds in the pickup, creating a somewhat uneven wind output, then some noise could come in to play.

how much noise are we talking about? unbearably loud or just a bit of 60 cycle?

On a humbucker? Im talking about a true humcanciling hb, like say, a 59 when tapped, and a sh-14 on un tapped. Just to give an example

nah, series/parallel just has to do with how the 2 coils are wired to hot in relation to eachother, or somesuch. coiltapping would involve cutting off part of the coil(or coils in the case of a humbucker) to ground. for ex, say you have 8000 winds, with 5000 winds set to be hot constantly and the outer 3000 to be 'tappable'. those would be grounded, and you'd have a weaker coil(or 2) with less output. similar results(less output) with different methods.

Right! Parallel is just a hum canciling single coil sound, for all intents.
I say we need to resarch this tappable hb idea. Prob nothing new, but it seems feasable. Imagine this with reg 4 conductor also. this could be the sh*t!

i wouldn't call it quite single coil sounding in all applications, rather a low output tone without as much balls. but your right, this idea must be exploited(unless it already has) to the full extent(in which case it may already have been)!

I would be interested to hear results (if it has been done) or ideas. I havent wound pickups before, and probably wont, but would be interested in having said version of either pickup (1/2 tapped or full) hb

Just a bit of 60 cycle. The more mismatched the coils are, the more you'll hear.

So I went and did it - today I ordered a custom made P90 with a coil tap. I can't wait til it gets here and I can try it out.

yes, your just grounding off part of the windings for both coils, lowering the output.

The cut-out coil is not grounded, it's just bypassed. If you shunt the main hot lead to ground, you would short out the entire pickup.
