Coil Splitting Diagram

Re: Coil Splitting Diagram

in that diagram, the V is the p/p. you can make whichever pot you want to be p/p.

what is your end goal?

Re: Coil Splitting Diagram

Thanks darthphineas.
I have a prewired HSH pickguard for Strat with and wanted to replace the bridge pick up with a TB-4 JB and the neck pickup with an SH-2n Jazz. I really like the coil split clean tones of the JB and the Jazz, hence the need for the diagram.

Re: Coil Splitting Diagram

do you want them to be split at the same time or to be split independently?

at the same time, you can wire them both to the same p/p pot, just like in that diagram

independently, it would take 2 p/p pots - prob a V and a T. the white & red of one pup would go to the V and the white & red of the other pup would go to the T. something like this ( http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=2h_1v_1t_3w_2pp ), but factor in the 5-way from your original diagram.

Re: Coil Splitting Diagram

I think wiring them to the same pot is a lot more convenient but does wiring them to do different pots make any difference other than the fact that they can be tapped at different times?

Re: Coil Splitting Diagram

nope.

I have some guitars set up both ways. some are each hum to it's own p/p pot. some have multiple hums to a single p/p pot. some have just the neck/middle to a single p/p pot and the bridge running in full series mode. in another instance I have two 1 meg ohm pots (one for each hum) and a single p/p tone pot for splitting them both. for me, it comes down to a few things that include what tones are going to work for which setup and how many switches and/or knobs do I want to have to fiddle with to get from one tone to another.

some cats might try to argue that having more wiring inside a guitar will load more resistance on the signal, which while it might be 'technically' correct for the guys the break out the lab coats, I think to be a non-issue... I mean look at the wiring Jimmy Page has had going on in some of his LPs and then try to argue with what he did with his tone (well, aside from musical preference, of course. lol!). so... I'm saying the extra 2-3" of wire you'll be adding in there for a 2nd p/p pot isn't going to change anything. just use quality parts and take your time to wire it up right.

Re: Coil Splitting Diagram

Would it be possible to have 2 push pull tone controls for splitting the humbuckers rather than using a volume and a tone pot?

Re: Coil Splitting Diagram

sure. you can replace whatever pots you want to with p/p pots.

just visualize the switch part as a switch and the pot part as the part. that way, it can be easier to imagine that a pot is a pot - period. the switch section added on to it is all that's different. pulling that knob on the pot is the same as flipping the toggle on a switch.
