Coil Splitting: Slug Coil vs Screw Coil

Assuming the coils are wound the same and are in the same physical position, have you noticed any difference between the sound of splitting to a stud coil vs a screw coil? Seems like there might be a difference since the screws are usually higher up then studs. Note, I'm talking about splitting to a screw coil that is, say, closest to the neck vs splitting to a stud coil that is closest to a neck (you would have to change the wiring and turn the pickup around physically).

well in terms of exact positions the real difference would be when you adjust the screws so the main difference would be the ability to manipulate the tone really and the fact that slug coils often have a different material for the slugs.

When designing HB p'ups, one compensate the lesser mass of the screws with a higher carbon alloy. The most common is 1018 slugs 1022 screws.

For a bridge PU, using the slug coil gives a little more volume and warmth (it's twice as far from the bridge, and gets more string energy. That's the biggest factor to worry about, not the coils themselves. Using the screw coil gives you a thinner, weaker tone.

I don't think there's much difference which coil you use in a neck HB.

Re: Coil Splitting: Slug Coil vs Screw Coil

I prefer the screw coil if it is going to be combined with another pup....gives it some snap and some pick attack.

If I were going to run it by itself, I would use the slug coil for the extra fatness.

It is all a matter of taste...no right or wrong.
